The Role.
The Communication Support Worker (CSW) will operate as a key enabler within the Foundation Learning and SEN provision, providing specialist communication support to a learner with hearing impairment working at Entry Level 1/2. The role is focused on maximising learner access, engagement, and progression by translating spoken language into British Sign Language (BSL), developing the learner’s communication skills, and supporting independence across classroom-based learning, enrichment activities, and off-site experiences. The post holder will work in close partnership with curriculum staff and the SEN team to embed inclusive practice and deliver positive learner outcomes.
This role is offered on Part time (26 hours per week, Term time only, Fixed term basis until July 2026.
Key responsibilities.
Provide specialist communication support within classroom settings, including English, Maths, and vocational subjects, ensuring full access to the curriculum.
Translate spoken language into BSL and/or other appropriate communication methods, including SSE and lip-speaking, as required.
Teach, reinforce, and model BSL signs to support the learner’s communication development and independence.
Offer language clarification and structured note-taking to enhance understanding and engagement.
Support the learner during enrichment activities, college trips, and off-site visits.
Collaborate effectively with teaching staff and the SEN team to adapt learning resources and delivery strategies.
Promote deaf awareness and inclusive practice across the college environment.
Maintain accurate records of support provided and contribute to learner reviews and progress monitoring.
Comply with safeguarding, equality, diversity, and health & safety policies at all times.
Participate in mandatory training, professional development activity, and performance review processes.
Our Ideal candidate should have the following qualifications, skills and experience.
GCSE English (Grade A–C) or equivalent.
British Sign Language (BSL) qualification at Level 3 or above (Signature or equivalent).
Experience supporting learners with hearing impairment within an educational or training environment.
Strong understanding of SEN strategies and inclusive learning practices.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to adapt communication approaches to individual learner needs.
Proven ability to teach and reinforce BSL signs effectively.
A flexible, adaptable, and learner-centred approach to support delivery.
Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with teaching and support teams.
Good organisational skills, with the ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
Desirable:
Communication Support Worker qualification or equivalent.
BSL Level 4 or above.
