Summary

Job Purpose: The key responsibilities of the Head of Phase 2 and Clinical Medicine will be a) the management and delivery of Phase 2 and b) oversight of clinical medicine across the 5 years of the MBBS programme in accordance with the GMC Outcomes for Graduates (OfG) and Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA), University requirements, and the SoM contingent partner (University of Lancashire). The role includes oversight of delivery of teaching, simulation, assessment, student support and evaluation for clinical medicine across the 5 years with a particular focus on Phase 2. The post holder will work closely with the SoM leadership team and will have line management responsibility for staff delivering clinical teaching and will co-line manage the Module leads alongside the Head of Phase 1. They will lead on curriculum and placement design, ensuring alignment with the GMCs OfG and MLA content map. They will work closely with the SoM Academic Heads, Professional Service Heads and Executive Dean to ensure continuity and alignment of clinical medicine across the programme. The Postholder will be a clinically active in the NHS, and an experienced secondary care medical educational leader with substantial experience in all aspects of higher education and pedagogic design. The postholder would draw upon their extensive clinical and academic experience to carry out research, scholarship, enterprise and engagement, teaching, leadership and management within the SoM. Main Duties and Responsibilities: Head of Phase 2 and Clinical Medicine Lead on development and delivery of the clinical curriculum and placements in Years 3-5 of the MBBS Programme, co-ordinating the lectures, workshops, simulation, placements, work-based and formative and summative assessments. Lead, develop and evaluate the clinical placements and related teaching content and support educators and students in delivering the course and fulfilling MLA and OfG requirements and alignment with contingent partner Work with the Head of Partnerships to secure sufficient Phase 2 placement capacity with a wide range of opportunities for MBBS students Work with Head of Phase 1, Module Leads and estates to ensure adequate teaching delivery and spaces are available for students throughout the MBBS programme, and with Head of Partnerships to ensure the quality assurance of Phase 2 Placements Work with Head of Phase 1, Head of Professional Practice and Development and Head of Partnerships where patient safety concerns are raised or ant concerns relating to students or educators on Phase 2 placements Oversee the recruitment and line management of supporting Training Fellows and sessional clinical staff where needed Work with Head of Phase 1 to jointly line manage the three Module Leads as above (IASCM, MedSoc, CPP) Contribute to the development, delivery and review of all aspects of the clinical medicine content of the MBBS Programme, including curriculum, assessment and student support, and to contribute to the regular quality visits undertaken by the GMC to the new programme. Drive evaluation, and scholarly activity related to Phase 2 and clinical medical across both Phases. Collaborate with academics at St Marys to explore co-teaching and co-learning opportunities, and Interprofessional Learning. Liaise with other Institutions regarding potential opportunities for student-selected and elective opportunities and additional experience for interested MBBS students. Work with the Phase and Assessment Leads, IT department and other colleagues on the design, development and implementation of in-course assessments, work-based assessments, written examinations and Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs). Work with Head of Assessment to develop questions, for Single Best Answers (SBA) and OSCEs. Oversee student electives in year 5. Academic Duties: Where the postholder may have capacity, they will: Develop curriculum materials and resources for the modules and contribute to the creation of formative and summative written assessments related to Clinical Medicine Engage in development activity within the curriculum to ensure content is current and innovative. Assist with written examinations and OSCE station writing, OSCE examining as required. Represent the School and University on appropriate external committees and boards to ensure appropriate representation of views. Develop excellent relationships with external stakeholders to ensure appropriate high-quality teaching and learning including placement opportunities for students. Work closely with other members of the SoM, ensuring cross-school working and collaboration, and work in partnership with professional services staff supporting the programme. Engage in continuing professional development to ensure adequate skills and knowledge to carry out the role. Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements in all aspects of work. Undertake such specific roles and management functions within the School and University as may be required by the line manager or such other person to whom responsibility may have been delegated Undertake any other duties relevant to the Schools activities and commensurate with the level of the post, as directed by the Director of Undergraduate Medicine or Executive Dean of School.
