Summary

The ALPHA collaboration at CERN synthesises and traps antihydrogen for precision tests of fundamental symmetry. The collaboration is world leading in precision spectroscopy and gravitational studies of antihydrogen. Following a major upgrade to the frequency metrology instrumentation in ALPHA, the aim is now to achieve or surpass the precision of spectroscopy in ordinary hydrogen. Swansea University is a founding member and a major stakeholder in the collaboration.

The successful candidate will join the Swansea team at CERN and will become a full member of the ALPHA collaboration. The group has three permanent academic staff members, four post-doctoral staff and a varying number of PhD students actively contributing to the ALPHA project at CERN.

We require the successful candidate to have a PhD in experimental physics. Experience in relevant sub-fields (e.g. laser physics, laser cooling, frequency metrology, trapped charged particles or atoms) or with some of the techniques we use (for instance cryogenics, ultra-high vacuum and Labview) will be appreciated.
