Commitment: 2 hours, once per week (term-time; day/time agreed)
Contract type: Professional services consultancy (suitable for self-employed / limited company practitioners)
Pay: Competitive hourly rate above National Minimum Wage, commensurate with qualifications and experience
Role purpose
BCI is seeking an experienced CAMHS / Mental Health Practitioner to provide specialist mental health input for post-16 SEND learners. You will deliver structured, trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming support, contribute to safeguarding and risk management, and advise staff and families to strengthen whole-college wellbeing practice, aligned to statutory expectations for education settings.
Key responsibilities
• Provide 1:1 support, brief interventions, and guided wellbeing sessions for post-16 SEND learners (within your professional scope of practice).
• Complete screening / formulation / needs-led assessments and contribute to support plans (including safety planning where appropriate).
• Offer consultation to staff (teachers, support staff, SENCo, DSL) on learners presenting with anxiety, low mood, trauma responses, emotional dysregulation, and complex needs.
• Support referrals and liaison with external services (e.g., NHS, community mental health, CAMHS pathways, GP, social care), and participate in relevant multi-agency meetings as required.
• Contribute to risk assessment and safeguarding processes, including advising on thresholds, escalation, and documentation (working closely with the Designated Safeguarding Lead).
• Deliver staff CPD / briefings (e.g., recognising mental health needs, de-escalation, trauma-informed practice, professional boundaries).
• Maintain accurate, confidential case notes and outcomes reporting in line with data protection and information-sharing expectations.
Essential criteria
• Recognised, current professional qualification appropriate to the role, and strong evidence of ongoing CPD.
• Demonstrable experience supporting post-16 learners with SEND, including autism, ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma presentations, and SEMH needs.
• Strong working knowledge of safeguarding expectations in education, including safer working practices and professional boundaries.
• Ability to work on-site, communicate clearly with young people who may have communication differences, and collaborate effectively with staff and families.
• Excellent written documentation skills and confidence contributing to professional meetings and plans.
Mandatory compliance (safer recruitment and SEND context)
BCI will require evidence of:
• Enhanced DBS appropriate to the role (and, where applicable, the relevant barred list check).
• Identity and Right to Work in the UK checks.
• Two professional references (and additional references where appropriate).
• Proof of qualifications and any relevant training/CPD.
• Professional indemnity insurance (and public liability insurance where applicable) for consultancy practice.
• Agreement to work in line with the SEND Code of Practice (0–25) and college safeguarding procedures.
Desirable
• Experience delivering or supporting whole-setting mental health approaches in schools/colleges and contributing to wellbeing policies and staff training.
• Experience supporting learners with college avoidance, complex trauma, or high anxiety presentations.
• Training in CBT-informed approaches, trauma-informed practice, or neuroaffirming interventions.
• Experience contributing to EHCP reviews or multi-agency planning.
What we offer
• A consistent weekly consultancy slot with a specialist post-16 SEND setting.
• Collaborative working with an experienced education team.
• A role that blends direct learner work with staff consultation and whole-college impact.
