Summary

EDS operates at the very heart of government, supporting the Prime Minister and the Cabinet in taking forward the government’s highest priority economic and domestic policy commitments. EDS reports directly to the Cabinet Secretary, and works closely with No10. We work with all government departments to ensure the coordination of policy and legislation across Whitehall, and we oversee and facilitate the collective ministerial decision-making process through the Cabinet committee system.

This vacancy sits within the Public Services team which is part of the Domestic Affairs Directorate. The team covers MHCLG, DHSC, DfE and most of Cabinet Office business. We work closely with the four other teams in our directorate - Justice, Home Affairs and Union; Strategy; Legislation; and the Central Secretariat - along with the other Directorates in EDS: Economic Affairs and the Joint Data and Analysis Centre. We are a friendly and collaborative team operating in a fast-paced environment and across a fascinating range of policy areas.

The Public Services desks are responsible for policy advice, cross-government coordination, collective agreement and the write round process for policy issues that fall across the portfolio. We also provide the Secretariat for Cabinet Committees in our area, including the newly established Public Services Committee, chaired by the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister.

We are seeking high-performing candidate for the Desk Officer role looking after the Department for Education (DfE) and Office for Equality and Opportunity (OEO) desks. This is a high-profile, fast-paced role in a small team. The role requires close working with the wider team, No10, departments and HMT, and with exposure to senior decisionmakers.
