What skills and experience we're looking for
Lincoln UTC rarely has vacancies, teaching or otherwise, so we are in the unusual position of recruiting for a Teacher of Engineering, ideally to join us from September 2026. We welcome applications from experienced teachers as well as newly or recently qualified colleagues.
An understanding of Engineering as a subject or through industry experience is highly desirable, though not essential. Many current Engineering teachers were originally trained in Design and Technology. Above all, candidates should demonstrate a genuine passion for the subject and a willingness to develop new, subject-specific Engineering skills, as these qualities are the most important attributes.
Our specialist engineering department is, as you would expect, very strong… we are, after all, a specialist engineering college. We invest heavily in specialist technical equipment within the engineering department. Recently, we received matched government funding totalling £485,000. This was used to purchase: new lathes throughout the department, a fibre laser cutter, advanced welding equipment, a plasma cutter, material testing equipment, and several industry standard CNC machines, robotic arms, and milling machines.
Our specialist subject teachers in maths, computer science and business work hand in hand with the engineering department to support delivery across the curriculum. Our teachers in these areas all support our engineering students extensively at key stage 5, in both technical level engineering and triple engineering.
What the school offers its staff
Lincoln UTC is a genuinely unique learning environment: a 14–18 specialist college for science, technology, engineering, and maths. Visitors often assume, incorrectly, that we are selective or fee-paying. This misconception usually comes from our remarkable buildings: an impressive Victorian listed frontage that would not look out of place at Hogwarts, paired with a striking £9 million new-build housing our laboratories and engineering workshops.
The culture inside is as impressive as the facilities. Students do not wear uniform; instead, they dress in business attire. They look like young professionals, and they behave as young professionals too. The college is calm, purposeful, respectful, and mature in atmosphere.
Our popularity has grown significantly in recent years, and we are already operating a waiting list for September 2026.
Our most recent Ofsted inspection (November 2024) backed up our previous inspection as ‘maintaining standards’. These standards were excellent however: Good overall with Outstanding in three areas. Inspectors praised our “strong and supportive culture” and “exceptionally high staff morale.” They described pupil behaviour as “impeccable” and noted that students have “exceptionally positive attitudes towards their learning.”
Further details about the role
If you would like to learn more about the college or about this role, please contact the Principal, Stuart Hamer, for an informal conversation on 01522 775990.
We warmly encourage visits so that you can experience Lincoln UTC for yourself; however, we fully understand that visiting is not always possible and will not disadvantage applicants unable to do so.
To arrange a visit, please contact Holly Hardiman-Crust on 01522 775990 or email HR@lincolnutc.co.uk.
Closing Date: Thursday 5th February 2026 - 12.00pm midday
