Are you a skilled tradesperson seeking a block of regular income working from a fixed location? We welcome applications from candidates who have not undertaken caretaker duties before but have transferable skills.
Our Opportunity
We are looking for a Caretaker to join our team, working under the guidance of our experienced Site Manager, to ensure our school is a safe place for pupils to learn and for staff to work.
We have two school sites - one at Airy Hill in Whitby and the other at Prospect Hill in Whitby. Our school is maintained by a team of site staff including a part-time Site Manager, Senior Caretaker, and two Caretakers (one who is also a Cleaning Supervisor for our Airy Hill Site). We commission some additional grounds maintenance tasks externally to help with the maintenance of both sites.
As our new caretaker you may be expected to work across our two sites, assisting with lettings as required on a rota basis, and will need to be flexible in your working hours and duties. You will work closely with our Site Manager to get a full induction, including manual handling and other health and safety courses, such as legionella and asbestos awareness.
This role is ideal for a self employed trades-person to have a solid block of work booked in until August 2026.
Key Duties:
- To ensure the security of the building and site, undertaking daily security checks
- To act as a designated key holder, providing response to emergency calls
- Lock and unlock buildings at pre-determined times, setting/disarming the alarms as required
- To monitor the heating system and report any faults
- To ensure outside areas are safe/clean, free from litter, debris, leaves and that there is safe access to the building during adverse weather conditions, eg, snow
- To undertake general portering duties whilst on site, including moving furniture and equipment
- To receive deliveries to the site
- To support the maintenance of the building and equipment, when required, including checking and replacing light fittings and undertaking minor repairs (where these do not require a certified contractor) to support the smooth running of the school
Experience and skills:
- Awareness of health and safety in a workplace and as an employee
- Experience of carrying out minor repairs
- Ability to use tools for making minor repairs (desirable)
We can offer you
- Standard 28 days holiday leave, plus paid bank holidays
- Option to be enrolled onto the local government pension scheme
- Access to Mental health and Wellbeing support services
- A supportive team and professional development opportunities
