Neway International are seeking a Cash Officer – Exchequer Finance Assistant to join our client, Somerset Council.
Location: The Crescent, Taunton, Somerset, TA1 4DY
Hours: 37 per week (1 day office, 4 remote – flexible)
Start Date: 05 January 2026
Duration: 14 weeks (until end of March/beginning of April)
Pay Rates: £13.05 per hour PAYE / £17.24 per hour Umbrella

The Exchequer & Systems Development team plays a vital role in supporting the council’s financial operations and ensuring robust processes across Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Cashiering functions.
The Role
As Cash Officer – Exchequer Finance Assistant, you will join the Cashiers Team to process financial transactions, administer schemes, and provide advice to staff, suppliers, and customers. This role requires accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to work flexibly across systems and processes.
Key Responsibilities
Process financial transactions including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Cashiering, and Master Data
Act as a local point of contact for finance queries, providing advice and guidance on AP/AR, cash handling, and financial regulations
Administer financial schemes such as Purchasing Cards, Petty Cash, Construction Industry Scheme, and controlled stationery
Monitor compliance with corporate processes and authorisation standards
Contribute to the development and testing of financial systems including Dynamics D365 and Income Management System (IMS)
Propose and implement solutions to financial process issues and regulatory changes
Maintain accurate information on finance systems and spreadsheets
Uphold equality, diversity, inclusion, and health & safety standards in all work
Candidate Requirements
Experience in finance administration or cashiering roles
Knowledge of AP/AR processes and financial regulations
Strong IT skills, including use of financial systems and spreadsheets
Ability to work independently and manage varied tasks accurately
Excellent communication skills for liaising with internal and external stakeholders
Experience with Dynamics D365 or similar financial systems desirable
