At FCDO Services we protect the UK’s interests at home and overseas. We design and construct secure government buildings and courier diplomatic packages worldwide, safeguard government tech and a whole lot more. Our work is as varied and vital as it gets, but we never lose sight of our people. Their skills, aspirations and growth mean as much as the global mission we’re on. In our world, it all matters.

Designing and building brand-new embassies in bustling cities and remote locations. Collaborating with architects, engineers and surveyors to design and reconfigure a high commission’s office space. Developing a secure site’s new CCTV System. This work is as varied and as vital as it gets. Now you’ve got the opportunity to join them.

Work internationally on an exciting range of important design projects

When you join us in this significant role you’ll have the exciting opportunity to travel the world as you work on a wide range of new build and refurbishment projects, including offices, homes and light industrial units. With a strong focus on inclusive, sustainable and safe design, you’ll ensure the successful delivery of each project from start to finish, and be responsible for coordinating multi‑disciplinary teams that focus on meeting your clients’ briefs, regulatory requirements and organisational standards. With the support of senior colleagues, you’ll act as the Lead Designer, facilitating design outputs across disciplines, supporting Project Managers with programme coordination, and helping to prepare fee proposals and scopes of work for upcoming projects.

Key to your success will be your ability to deliver presentations and collaborate with customers and stakeholders to develop briefs that reflect their requirements – some of these will be operating at an extremely senior level, and include Ambassadors, High Commissioners and Overseas Security Advisors. Your designs should be capable of adapting to international contexts and sensitive requirements, and incorporate high-quality technical drawings using Revit, and specifications using NBS and RIBA Stage Reports using InDesign. All your deliverables should be peer reviewed, delivered on time and to the highest professional standards, and when required, we may ask you to undertake the necessary training to act as CDM Principal Designer and Building Safety Act Principal Designer.

Use all your building design skills as you help defend the nation’s interests

As a enthusiastic and highly professional ARB Registered Architect with experience of working on a wide range of new build and refurbishment programmes, you should have well developed knowledge of all RIBA Works Stages (0-7), proven experience of Stages 2-4, and the skills to lead or contribute to projects from their early conception through to technical delivery. Capable of working both independently and collaboratively in fast moving, multi-disciplinary environments, your excellent interpersonal and communication skills will allow you to organise meetings, coordinate a diverse range of stakeholders and adapt to changing requirements and environments.

It goes with saying that you’ll have good knowledge of current UK Planning, Building Regulations and Health & Safety legislation, and when it comes to IT skills you should be a highly proficient user of Revit, MS Word and Excel, and Adobe InDesign with some understanding of AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, NBS and MS Project. Experience of undertaking CDM and BSA Principal Designer roles would be desirable, as would practical knowledge of heritage buildings and sustainability practices, including BREEAM projects. In addition, you’ll be at an advantage if you possess some foreign language skills and experience of working in the security sector.

Discover the support you need to grow your career further

Our offices have an on-site gym, nursery, café, and restaurant, and we offer interest-free loans on season tickets and bikes to help you get there.
