Clinical To provide holistic care for the sick neonate and their family who may require neonatal high dependency and/or special care. To be responsible for the assessment of care required by the sick neonate in conjunction with medical and specialist staff, ensuring family centred care by working in partnership with parents/carers and using effective communication skills. To be responsible for the planning and implementation of individual programmes of neonatal care required, ensuring physical, social, psychological and spiritual needs are met, including communicating sensitive information within the multi-disciplinary team. To act at all times in accordance with the NMC Codes of Conduct and Practice. To ensure safe practice they will have the ability to concentrate for long periods of time. To have the ability to deal with distressing and emotional circumstances. To assess the individual patient needs using a family centred and holistic approach. To observe and help assess parents needs and participate in appropriate education. To communicate and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, assisting other as required. Recognise child protection issues and refer to appropriate agencies following consultation with nurse in charge. To be responsible for allocated patients and provide continuity of care with the support of senior members of staff where required. To recognise and deal with complaints in accordance with Trust Policy. To become competent in the use of equipment appropriate to care for the Special Care and High Dependency neonate. To undertake extended role programmes as appropriate such as the Foundation course. To undertake the Neonatal High Dependency and Intensive Care course. To take responsibility as allocated for extended roles i.e. Infection Control, Cleft Lip and Palate, Palliative Care, Safeguarding, Blood Transfusion, Developmental Care, Breastfeeding, Family integrated Care. To participate in the Trusts appraisal system (Personal Review & Development Plan - PRDP) EDUCATION Complete a years period of preceptorship . To provide a positive learning environment for Student Nurses, Apprentices and Trainee Assistant Practitioners. To support fellow colleagues and students and participate in the teaching and assessment of students as necessary. Be responsible for ones own personal and professional development. To attend mandatory study days as required by the Trust and external study days when allocated and provide feedback to other members of staff to maximise utilisation of knowledge. An expectation that the individual would aspire to the ethos of life-long learning and on-going professional development and an expectation to undertake further development and the Neonatal Intensive Care qualification. To undertake extended role programmes as appropriate such as the Foundation course, the Neonatal High Dependency and Intensive Care course. RESEARCH To participate in the implementation and audit of standards of care as required. To demonstrate an understanding of research and participate in research programmes and audit, which may improve the quality of patient, care. To ensure that practice is evidence based and in adherence to KGH Trust and the Neonatal Unit guidelines and procedures. To ensure that nursing interventions reflect current research evidence available. MANAGEMENT To ensure that nursing interventions reflect current research evidence available. To utilise resources in an economical and effective manner. To supervise other staff as delegated and aid their development. To anticipate and identify any conflicts or problem areas and refer to senior staff as necessary. To co-ordinate ward activities, If required, with support from colleagues. To have an awareness of Shared Governance within the Trust. To be flexible in work patterns to ensure an adequate skill mix and staffing levels to provide a safe environment. Statutory and miscellaneous Take responsibility to ensure that Professional Registration is up to date at all times and does not lapse or expire and to inform line management immediately with any concerns or if registration lapses or expires. (all registered staff) This post involves access to children and/or vulnerable adults as defined by the Criminal Records Bureau. It will therefore be necessary to apply to the CRB for a Disclosure Check. This post requires a satisfactory Disclosure check of the post holder. Be responsible for maintaining own vaccinations/Hepatitis B immunity. Safeguard patient confidentiality at all times including adherence to the Data Protection Act. Attend the Trust statutory refresher courses as necessary This post is subject to the terms and conditions of employment of Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Have a commitment to identifying and minimising risk, report all incidents and report to manager any risks which need to be assessed. Any other duties commensurate with the grade and in line with the requirement of the post.
