JOB ROLE: Support Worker - Autism

HOURS: 40 per week

LOCATION: Paignton, Devon TQ4

SALARY: £12.60 - £13.30* per hour


We are excited to offer an opportunity for an experienced Support Worker to join our brand-new supported living service in Paignton, specifically supporting individuals with autism. If you have experience working with people on the autism spectrum and a passion for empowering individuals to live fulfilling, independent lives, this is the role for you.

As a Support Worker, you will work closely with the individuals we support, their families, and a multidisciplinary team of professionals to help them achieve their goals, increase independence, and lead a fulfilling life.

About the role:

  • Day-to-Day Support: Provide consistent support to individuals with autism, assisting with daily routines, activities, and ensuring a structured and predictable environment.

  • Promoting Independence: Support individuals to develop life skills and greater independence, including encouraging participation in hobbies, social activities, and community integration.

  • Health & Wellbeing Support: Help with managing health care needs, including attending medical appointments, administering medication, and ensuring that each individual’s wellbeing is monitored.

  • Teaching Life Skills: Support with practical tasks such as budgeting, shopping, cooking, and household management, teaching skills to help individuals live more independently.

  • Social & Emotional Support: Foster positive social interactions, offering emotional support, promoting self-regulation, and helping individuals build confidence in social settings.

  • Sensory and Behavioral Support: Use autism-specific techniques and strategies to support sensory needs and manage behaviors, ensuring a safe and calming environment for each person.

  • Personal Care: Assist with personal care tasks when required, promoting dignity and respecting individual preferences.

  • Domestic Assistance: Help with domestic tasks, including cleaning, cooking, and ensuring a comfortable living environment.


What We Are Looking For:

  • Experience with Autism: Prior experience supporting individuals with autism, whether in supported living, residential care, or other settings, is essential. Familiarity with autism spectrum conditions and the various ways it can affect communication, behavior, and sensory processing will be beneficial.

  • Understanding of Autism-Specific Approaches: Experience with approaches and autism-specific strategies to support individuals’ needs.

  • Person-Centered Approach: You should be compassionate and person-centered, ensuring that you meet the specific needs of each individual and adapt your support to each person’s preferences and strengths.

  • Flexibility & Adaptability: The ability to work in a flexible way, adapting to changing needs and preferences and understanding the importance of a structured and predictable routine for individuals with autism.

  • Excellent Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to liaise with families, professionals, and support networks, as well as to implement care plans effectively.

  • Team Collaboration: Ability to work collaboratively within a team of professionals, supporting individuals as part of a coordinated care approach.
