Summary
About The Mayfield Trust
The Mayfield Trust is a long-established charity based in Calderdale, dedicated to supporting people with learning disabilities to live life to the fullest. Since 1952, we have pioneered inclusive, person-led services in our community — from supported living, LD nursing care and outreach, to community based day opportunities and a thriving activity centre.
We are proud to be the first charity in Calderdale to offer this kind of support, and our approach remains rooted in promoting choice, independence, and meaningful experiences. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all care: our staff receive in-house training and use responsive, individualised methods tailored to each person’s needs and aspirations.
Our work is guided by our core values:
- Work with Kindness
- Support Experiences
- Care Creatively
- Embrace Change
Hours and Pay
Hours: 12-hour shifts on a Rota basis, covering a 24-hour support service across 7 days a week.
Pay: £13.94 per hour
Full and part time hours available (minimum 24hrs per week)
Job Purpose
To provide compassionate, person-led support to individuals who may experience emotional distress or have diverse communication and support needs, ensuring their safety and well-being. Working closely with night staff for continuity of care. This role is part of our Intensive Support Team, working in partnership with individuals, families, and professionals to create safe, meaningful, and empowering environments. You will use Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and trauma-informed approaches to help people live purposeful lives, build relationships, and achieve personal goals.
Key Responsibilities
• Build trusting relationships with the people you support, respecting their choices, dignity, and individuality.
• Deliver responsive, person-centred support in line with individual plans, including PBS strategies.
• Support with daily routines such as personal care, meals, medication, and household tasks, always promoting independence.
• Recognise and respond to distress or behavioural communication with empathy and skill, using de-escalation techniques and PBS.
• Encourage participation in community life, hobbies, and personal development activities.
• Keep accurate records of wellbeing, progress, and incidents using agreed systems.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues, families, and external professionals to ensure consistent and holistic support.
• Contribute to the development and review of support plans, risk assessments, and PBS strategies.
• Promote safeguarding, dignity, inclusion, and emotional safety at all times.
• Participate in ongoing training and reflective practice to maintain high standards of care.
Skills & Experience
Must have:
• Experience supporting people with learning disabilities and individuals who may communicate through behaviour or experience emotional distress (2 years preferred).
• Strong emotional resilience and ability to stay calm in pressured situations.
• Strong communication skills — able to listen actively, speak clearly, and write clear, accurate records.
• A person-led approach, with patience, empathy, and attention to detail.
• Ability to build trusting relationships with the people you support, colleagues, and external partners.
• Organised, motivated, and confident working independently or as part of a team.
• Flexibility to work 12-hour shifts, including weekends and bank holidays.
• Understanding of Positive Behaviour Support and trauma-informed de-escalation techniques.
• Awareness of safeguarding, mental capacity, and health & safety principles.
• Experience working in inclusive, values-led environments.
Qualifications
• Minimum Level 2 Health & Social Care or Care Certificate (required).
• Minimum Grade C English & Math’s or equivalent.
• Minimum Level 3 Health & Social Care (preferred)
Values & Personal Qualities
• Caring, empathetic, and committed to humanising support.
• Reliable, self-motivated and has a positive outlook.
• Creative and proactive in problem-solving and everyday care.
• Is emotionally grounded, trustworthy, and respectful of others’ lived experiences.
• Embraces diversity and promotes inclusion in all aspects of their work.
• Is open-minded, flexible, and willing to learn and grow.
• Shares our belief that everyone deserves purposeful, fulfilling lives.
Benefits
• Paid training and access to a wide variety of vocational learning and development opportunities.
• Supportive, values-led culture.
• Opportunity to develop your career in social care.
• 28 days full time equivalent holidays each year, including bank holidays.
