The Economy and Innovation team sits within the Economic Directorate in EDS. We are a small dynamic team leading work on the priorities of four key economic departments: the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, the Department for Work and Pensions, the Department for Business and Trade and His Majesty's Treasury.
We are recruiting for a new senior policy advisor to lead the DSIT portfolio. This is an exciting, stretching role, working on some of the Government’s leading science and tech priorities, and the wider growth agenda.
We are a friendly, collaborative and flexible Directorate operating in a fast paced environment. You will need to be comfortable working at pace across a range of issues, collaborating with different teams both within EDS, across Cabinet Office, and across government. You will also contribute to the corporate agenda across EDS and the wider Cabinet Secretariat. Candidates will need experience working in fast-paced environments and coordinating across multiple teams, excellent policy judgement, strong communication and influencing skills, a good sense of the wider political context, and excellent stakeholder management.
In EDS, we value diversity and inclusion and actively encourage and welcome applications from everyone, including those that are underrepresented in our workforce.
The right candidate will have strong strategic policy experience, well-developed stakeholder management and communication skills, sound judgment (including on areas that are politically contentious), and an ability to lead in a complex, changing environment.
The role will involve:
- Advising the Cabinet Secretary, Prime Minister, Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister and No 10 senior team on a wide range of policy issues (recent examples include delivery of the AI Opportunities Action Plan, and AI copyright);
- Convening thinking across departmental boundaries to progress government priorities, including leading strategic projects in priority areas both within the DSIT portfolio and beyond. There is significant scope to proactively identify areas, and shape the strategic focus of the role;
- Supporting Cabinet to reach collective agreement on DSIT policies, including running Cabinet committees and the write round process. Brokering consensus and resolving policy differences - including on areas of high profile political disagreement;
- Maintaining a strong and trusted network across EDS, the Cabinet Office, No10, and DSIT including with senior officials and private offices; and,
- Providing excellent line management of the DSIT desk officer.
