Crynodeb

The Consultant Haematologist will provide expert clinical leadership and deliver high-quality care across all areas of haematology, including in-patient, out-patient and haemato-oncology services. The post-holder will join an established team of five consultants, three SpRs, five resident doctors and five clinical nurse specialists, serving the Medway Towns and Swale population of approximately 370,000. The role encompasses ward-based care on the 18-bed Lawrence Ward, outpatient clinics and support for chemotherapy delivery in the Galton Day Unit. In addition to direct patient care, the consultant will participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings, liaise with regional and tertiary centres including Kings College Hospital and Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells, and contribute to specialist services such as thrombophilia, haemophilia and sickle cell management. The post-holder will also participate in a 1:5 on-call rota covering weekdays and weekends. The Consultant Haematologist will work closely with the Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratories as part of the North Kent Pathology Service, applying diagnostic results to clinical management and supporting ongoing quality improvement and accreditation initiatives. Teaching and training responsibilities include supervision of junior medical staff, participation in the formal educational programme for trainees, and teaching of medical students from Guys, Kings, and St Thomas School of Medicine. The post-holder will be expected to undertake QESP training to act as an educational supervisor for junior staff, supporting their professional development. The role offers opportunities to participate in clinical research, including national and pharmaceutical trials and to develop personal research or specialty interests through collaboration with regional and academic partners. The Consultant Haematologist will contribute to the management and strategic development of the Haematology Department, participate in departmental and specialist group meetings and engage in hospital-wide quality improvement and governance initiatives.
