Job Purpose The Apprentice Dietitian works under dietetic supervision to support the dietitians in providing a nutrition and dietetic service for patients and their carers. As an Apprentice Dietitian you will undertake a two-year MSc. in Dietetics and Leadership (pre-registration) apprenticeship approved by the Healthcare Care Professional Council and accredited by the BDA. Under the supervision of a registered Dietitian the post holder will be expected: To independently carry out assessments as designated by a Dietitian as part of clinical pathways. To support the nutrition and dietetic services in the community including in health centres, care homes, schools, patients own homes and other care settings. To recognise variances in expected clinical outcomes and to act appropriately by escalating to and seeking guidance from a Dietitian. To provide support and assistance to the Dietitian in the assessment and treatment of complex patients. To promote effective nutrition care plans and best practice in all care settings, by providing education, training and support for healthcare professionals and staff in care agencies. To make assessments of patients nutritional progress and provide advice as required under the supervision of the Dietitian. To be able to identify own limitations and seek advice from a senior registered practitioner when appropriate. Dimensions STAFF: No line management responsibilities. You will be expected to support staff and student training. BUDGET: No budgetary responsibilities. AREA: Nottingham City. You will be required to work across different bases and community settings and be able to travel to Coventry University and other clinical providers as required. Key Responsibilities 1. Clinical This will involve: Supporting dietitians to manage their follow up paediatric and adult clinical caseload via: Reviewing/ prioritising patients on waiting lists Direct contact with patients, carers, parents and children via face to face, videoconference and/or telephone. Undertaking dietetic weighing clinics in a variety of primary care and community settings, to be responsible for maintaining their equipment (scales) Communicating with other health professionals and community staff To work within specific Band 4 job description and competencies To undertake clinical assessments to fulfil the requirements of clinical placement from Coventry University. To have an awareness of different communication styles with the ability to adapt to overcome any barriers. The ability to negotiate, persuade and motivate during the clinical consultation Support dietitians to communicate relevant dietary and lifestyle advice effectively, in an understandable form accompanied by appropriate literature/ diet sheets. Analysing food diaries using the Nutritics computerised package. Keep up to date in basic IT skills in line with modernisation of data collection records. Maintaining accurate and comprehensive electronic patient records using SystmOne. Undertaking data collection e.g. use of SystmOne and other packages to collect patient data statistics. To attend and contribute to team meetings and case discussions using effective communication skills. Supporting the administration team as required. This will include daily admin tasks. To undertake any other duties that may be reasonably required by clinicians. To delegate work to Dietetic Assistant and admin when appropriate To recognise and escalate a deteriorating patient and take initial action where appropriate. To ensure children and adults are protected from abuse and avoidable harm and report any safeguarding concerns in accordance with organisation policies and procedures. To use own initiative and professional curiosity, raise any concerns with peer/mentor/management To be responsible for planning and prioritising own day-to-day allocated workload and resources. To document records accurately and timely, whilst maintaining confidentiality including sensitive/complex information 2. Education and Training This will involve: Supporting delivery of evidence-based training on diet and nutrition-related topics, incorporating the provision of relevant educational materials and evaluation. Supporting in the training programmes of other health professionals and students e.g. shadowing opportunities, tutorials, lectures, workshops, and seminars. Potential opportunities to support the delivery of patient group education sessions. Responding to ad-hoc requests from professionals or patient support groups for dietary education sessions and displays on a variety of topics. The post holder will be expected to undertake ongoing personal, professional and management development in line with the responsibilities of the post. Undertake a 2-year apprenticeship resulting (upon successful completion) in registration with the healthcare professional council as dietitian. Students are expected to meet the goals and deadlines of the university course. There are typically two study days per week, except during placement periods, when a 37.5-hour work schedule applies. Additional independent study time may also be required Undertake a range of clinical placements over the 2 years to widen understanding of professional dietetic practice. Complete all assessments and portfolio building to pass individual academic modules. Work towards and successfully pass the End Point Assessment as defined within the apprenticeship standards. 3. Professional Advice and Liaison This will involve: Working with the wider community services including primary health care teams, the public health nutrition lead for the childrens public health 0-19 nursing service, care homes and community nursing and other professional groups to ensure consistent and appropriate nutrition and dietetic advice is available throughout the community. Promoting evidence-based dietary guidelines for healthy eating and therapeutic diets. Supporting requests for dietetic input to specific health events or to individual groups requiring information. Acting as a source of unbiased, up-to-date information on nutrition to health professionals and other agencies. 4. Service Development This will involve: Contributing to the development of appropriate departmental policies and procedures and the continuing development of the Community Nutrition and Dietetic Service. Supporting the implementation of national programmes such as the Healthy Child 0-19 Programme, Healthy Start campaign and local guidelines on food and nutrition, ONS guidelines, food allergy, faltering growth, feeding difficulties and obesity. Supporting identification of appropriate messages and liaising with the public health nutrition and/ or clinical teams on nutrition matters as they arise. Undertaking projects under the supervision of a Registered Dietitian, for example, developing and evaluating appropriate resources for patients and professionals. Participating in professional or nutrition-related research, evaluation, and audit. 5. Competence to Practice This will involve: Working within the Dietetic Apprentice job role including following local and national professional codes of conduct. A commitment to continuing professional development, including the undertaking of relevant formal and informal training and collection of evidence of competency to practice. Contributing to regular team clinical supervision sessions. Participating in individual performance appraisals and supervision and be active in identifying aims and objectives for personal development in line with departmental policy. Involvement in risk management assessments as required. Complying with Nottingham CityCare policies, standard operating procedures, and statutory regulations. The post holder will be required to undertake mandatory training and is responsible for keeping this training up to date.
