Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Health & Safety Manager to join our growing, ambitious and diverse team within the Estates and Facilities Directorate here at the University of Salford.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will provide leadership, management, guidance and support to the H&S team and across the entire University to ensure the development and maintenance of health and safety standards and safe working practices. You will support with delivering the corporate strategy, objectives, arrangements and infrastructure for managing health and safety, as well as monitoring the levels of compliance and implementation. You will hold a NEBOSH certificate (National Examining Board for Occupational Safety and Health) or equivalent professional Health & Safety qualification and IOSH membership (TechIOSH) as a minimum requirement and preferably a NEBOSH Diploma/Graduate IOSH or working towards this.

To be successful in this role you will be strong leader, experienced in providing advice and guidance regarding compliance with relevant statutory requirements, legislation and regulations, and promoting best practice in accordance with sector and professional standards. Key responsibilities will also include policy development, performing health and safety audits, ensuring robust governance is in place, supporting investigations, reviewing and where appropriate undertaking risk assessments and DSE’s, report writing, leading or participating in working groups for the delivery of specific health, safety and well being projects and supporting incident investigation and corrective action implementation.

Experience of UK health and safety best practice and legislation, along with relevant practical experience in managing health and safety in the workplace is essential. Previous experience in Higher Education would be advantageous but is not essential.

About the Department

This role, while positioned within the Estates and Facilities Directorate (E&FD), has responsibilities that span the entire University. The post-holder is expected to provide expertise, guidance, and advice to ensure a safe environment for all academic, student, professional service, and visitor-related activities. The purpose of the role is to foster a culture of accountability for health and safety in all University colleagues, in order to ensure compliance with both legislation and relevant best practice.

Salford operate a Hybrid working model (minimum of three days per week onsite, subject to business demands) and there may be a requirement to work evenings and weekends, as the business demands.

There may also be a requirement for the post-holder to participate in local on-call arrangements, as relevant to the role. In addition, there may be a requirement to participate in the University’s Silver Command on-call rota arrangements for major incidents.
