We need a passionate, highly skilled, and experienced software engineer with:
- A strong track record of leading software engineering teams and delivering complex digital solutions.
- Deep expertise in modern software development practices, including microservices, event-driven architecture, CI/CD, and cloud-native technologies.
- Excellent communication, influencing, and organisational skills.
- A commitment to continuous improvement and user-centred design.

As a Lead Software Engineer, you’ll be a recognised expert in your field, leading the design, development, and support of high-quality software products. You’ll set the standard for software craftsmanship, drive innovation, and foster a culture of technical excellence across multiple engineering teams.
This is a strategic and hands-on leadership role, where your influence will extend across the organisation and potentially wider government. Key responsibilities include:
- Technical Leadership: Define and champion engineering standards, ensuring consistent adoption across teams to deliver robust, scalable, and secure software.
- Frameworks & Tools: Lead the design and implementation of frameworks, tools, and processes that enable responsible development, deployment, and monitoring of digital services.
- Enablement & Collaboration: Act as a technical enabler, resolving blockers, promoting reuse, and driving collaboration across engineering communities.
- Vision & Strategy: Shape the future of software delivery as part of the leadership team, and lead the engineering community through that transformation.
- Mentorship & Culture: Foster a high-performance culture, mentoring engineers and ensuring continuous professional development.
- Best Practice Evangelism: Promote best practices in design, architecture, and delivery across DWP Digital and beyond.
