Crynodeb
We are an independent pre-preparatory and nursery school for 75 girls and boys aged 3-7 years, previously known as The New School. As a small, happy school with a strong academic ethos and a warm, familiar approach to pastoral care, this is a great place to work where you will quickly feel part of the team. Our key aim is to develop a real love of learning and build great character in our children.
In 2021, we became part of the Exeter School family. Exeter School is an HMC and IAPS co-educational school for 960 children aged 7 to 18. Almost all children progress to Exeter Junior School from Exeter Pre-Prep at age 7. The school is located in a former Victorian chapel on a private, wide, tree-lined avenue within an acre of grounds. Just three miles from central Exeter in the village of Exminster, it provides an oasis of calm from the bustle of city life.
We are looking for a fixed term, part-time Year 1 Class Teacher to cover maternity leave, working 3 days a week, Mondays to Wednesdays. The post is available from 23 February 2026 until 8 July 2026. Class sizes are usually 18-20 children with full-time TA assistance and the support of a happy, collaborative team. Applicants will hold a relevant teaching qualification and have experience of working in Key Stage 1 and/or Early Years.
We are seeking a capable and enthusiastic person who has strong communication skills and a willingness to contribute to the broader life of this vibrant independent day school. As a small, busy school where everyone pitches in, the need to be a flexible, adaptable, reliable and punctual team player will be paramount. An enthusiastic, “can do” approach, together with patience, a sense of humour and the ability to maintain confidentiality will be essential.
Generous benefits include free school lunch during term time, free parking, pension scheme and membership of the school’s health care plan. Applications must include a completed Exeter School application form. For safeguarding purposes, a CV alone is not sufficient.
The closing date for applications is noon on Wednesday 10 December 2025. We anticipate that interviews will be held on Wednesday 17 December 2025. Exeter School is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from any appropriately qualified person. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening, appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service. Employment is subject to the receipt of two satisfactory references provided specifically for this post and addressed to the school, and to satisfactory DBS clearance.
This post falls into the category of Regulated Activity. Exeter School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service
Note on Sponsorship: We regret to inform you that, we are unable to offer sponsorship for work authorisation for this role. Therefore, candidates must possess valid authorisation to work in the UK without requiring visa sponsorship.
