Role: Return to Learn & Internal Inclusion Lead
Location: Newport High School
Contract: Full-time, Term-time only
Grade: 6
About the Role
We are seeking a calm, consistent, and resilient Teaching Assistant to lead our Return to Learn and Internal Inclusion provision. This is a vital role in supporting positive behaviour and ensuring students remain engaged in their learning.
Return to Learn is a space for students who need time to reflect and re-regulate after disrupting learning or being involved in unsafe behaviour. Internal Inclusion provides a structured alternative to fixed-term exclusion, where students complete a planned period of isolation as a sanction.
About our school
Newport High School is a fully comprehensive school serving the community of Bettws in Newport. At Newport High School, our mission is guided by the values of Integrity, Commitment, and Equality. We believe every child deserves the chance to succeed, regardless of their circumstances. Our school serves an area of significant deprivation with approximately 36% of our students eligible for Free School Meals, and data from WMID shows that around 60% of our families live in the most deprived wards.
This year, our number one priority is to remove the impact of poverty on our students’ education and wellbeing. Through our RISE culture—Respect, Independence, being Safe, and being Equipped—we aim to create an environment where every child can thrive.
The successful candidate will:
• Create a safe, supportive environment that promotes reflection and positive choices.
• Balance empathy with high expectations, ensuring students return to mainstream lessons promptly.
• Work closely with pastoral teams to implement behaviour strategies and monitor progress.
• Maintain clear boundaries and uphold school policies consistently.
What We’re Looking For
• Significant experience working with secondary-aged students, including those with additional needs.
• Excellent communication and behaviour management skills.
• Ability to remain calm under pressure and model positive behaviour.
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to work independently.
Qualifications
• NVQ Level 3 or equivalent (Level 4 desirable).
• HLTA status or willingness to work towards it.
Why Join Us?
You’ll play a key role in shaping a positive school culture and making a real difference to young people’s lives.
