Start Date: 15 December 2025
Duration: 16 Weeks
Hours per Week: 37.5

PAYE: £14.82 per hour Limited/Umbrella: £19.89 per hour

Location: Wellington Depot, Somerset (working full-time across Taunton/Wellington areas)

Role Purpose
Somerset Council is seeking a skilled Asbestos Removal (Non-licenced) Operative to join our Building Services & Maintenance team. This role is vital in ensuring compliance with statutory obligations around housing property management, specifically asbestos management and removal.

You will undertake the removal and encapsulation of non-licenced asbestos and asbestos-containing materials in line with HSE’s Asbestos Essentials guidance, ensuring properties are safe for tenants, contractors, and staff.

Key Responsibilities
Remove and encapsulate non-licenced asbestos materials (e.g., floor tiles, sheds, garages, loft insulation, fireplaces, toilets, kitchen units).

Reinstatement of appropriate materials where required.

Undertake sampling and reinspection of properties.

Assist in void clearance and capital work streams (e.g., water hygiene management).

Apply correct safety signage in line with regulations.

Liaise with contractors, housing teams, and tenants to ensure safe and efficient delivery of services.

Support and coach less experienced colleagues and apprentices.

Maintain compliance records (e.g., Waste Transfer Notes).

Ensure adherence to The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and other relevant legislation.

Qualifications & Experience
Essential:

Non-licensed (Cat B) asbestos removal certificate (updated annually).

Health surveillance (updated every 3 years).

Asbestos awareness training and experience.

Experience in asbestos removal and safe site setup.

Competent in PPE and RPE use (clean-shaven requirement for RPE).

Valid UK driving licence (max 3 penalty points).

Desirable:

BOHS P402 qualification.

Knowledge of safety signage, task sheets, risk assessments, and method statements.

Experience using Microsoft Outlook and Teams.

Skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to follow written guidance and task sheets.

Ability to drive a long wheelbase van.

Team player with the ability to work independently.

Working Conditions
Exposure to hazardous substances (Fit for Work assessment required).

Routine Face Fit testing and training every 2 years.

Work in varied environments including flats, houses, sheltered housing, offices, depots, and municipal buildings.

Potentially challenging conditions (e.g., confined spaces, aggressive tenants, drug paraphernalia).

Outdoor work in all weather conditions.

Participation in out-of-hours rota (additional payment provided).
