This fixed-term, six-month post within the Lymphoma Disease Group offers an exciting opportunity to contribute equally to clinical service and academic research (50:50 split). The position is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week and is based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, a leading centre for cancer care and research.

The post-holder will have clinical responsibilities in lymphoma oncology, supporting the delivery of high-quality patient care in line with NICE Improving Outcomes Guidance for Haematological Cancers. In addition to direct clinical duties, the successful candidate will actively contribute to the development and implementation of research initiatives aimed at improving outcomes for patients with lymphoma. They will collaborate with two University clinical academics leading research in late effects and translational biomarkers at The Christie and the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). Consultants in the department participate in an on-call rota that involves a commitment to a full week in every twenty weeks with responsibilities during normal working hours and non-resident out of hours.

This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic clinician with an interest in academic medicine to gain experience within a dynamic multidisciplinary team at one of the UK’s foremost cancer centres.

The successful candidate will provide comprehensive care & clinical oversight for medical oncology inpatients & outpatients within the lymphoma service. They will develop, lead and deliver a high-quality clinical programme aimed at improving patient outcomes & will play a key role in establishing a regional cardio-oncology service. A significant aspect of the role will be to expand the clinical trials portfolio, increasing patient access to novel therapies and personalised medicine, particularly through the adoption of biomarker-driven trial designs.

The apointee will lead new investigator-initiated studies through the UKCCC Lymphoma Group and work to increase referrals for clinical trials & second opinions, thereby enhancing the national and international visibility of the service. They will contribute to the planned expansion of ECMC early-phase lymphoma research, supporting patients’ access to innovative treatments & generating additional commercial income for the Trust. In addition, the post-holder will develop real-world observational studies on rare lymphomas such as PMBCL and PTLD through national & international collaboration.

The role also carries important academic & educational responsibilities, including participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and the supervision of MD & PhD students. The post-holder will lead a regional oncology education programme for foundation trainees, supporting the development of the next generation of clinical academics.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.

We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

The post-holder will have clinical commitments in Lymphoma oncology and will help to develop and deliver a high quality clinical and research service to improve outcomes for patients with lymphoma.


The role will be responsible for:
