We are looking for talented hydraulic modellers to join our teams across most of our offices and regions. This opportunity is open to all levels of experience, from junior grades to Principal – and our requirements are commensurate with grade.

Our modelling covers a range of interesting and rewarding areas of work, including:

• Scheme appraisal and design
• Integrated flood risk issues
• Optioneering assessments
• Nature-based solutions and climate adaptation strategies – for high and low flows
• Reservoir safety assessment
• Flood forecasting
• Catchment-scale flood mapping.

Your role:

With a background in hydraulic modelling, you will work on a variety of flood risk modelling and mapping related projects. Successful applicants will work alongside our planning, appraisal, engineering, environment and design teams. These projects make a difference to local communities and the environment, serving a range of public and private sector clients.

Responsibilities are commensurate with grade, but include:

• Deliver high-quality modelling outputs
• Problem-solving and effective communication of solutions
• Champion innovation and apply cutting-edge tools and methods
• Collaborate with clients, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams
• Support junior colleagues and contribute to business development
• Experience of project and task management.

We are looking for a candidate who:

• Has experience in hydraulic modelling
• Has experience in collaborative working, with effective interpersonal skills and able to communicate with colleagues, clients and stakeholders
• Is a flexible team player, able to work with different project teams both locally and across remote offices.

The right candidate will have:

• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in environmental science, geography, mathematics or related field.
• Chartered status is important to JBA and valued by our clients – you should be Chartered or be able to demonstrate your commitment towards becoming Chartered with an appropriate professional body.

Essential attributes for the role:

• Experience in flood risk hydraulic modelling (one or more of these packages: Flood Modeller, HEC-RAS, Infoworks ICM, MIKE+, TUFLOW)
• Confident using 1D, 2D and 1D/2D techniques in rural and urban environments
• Proficient in GIS (ArcGIS/QGIS) and terrain data analysis
• Experience in managing projects, winning work and liaising with clients (applicable to more senior grade positions)
• Collaborative, self-motivated, and an effective communicator – you will work with different project teams both locally and across our offices.

Desirable attributes for the role:

• Knowledge of hydrological methods (e.g. FEH)
• Understand UK flood risk policy and management approaches
• Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams
• Experience in business case appraisal
• Technical writing Coding in Python or R.
• Knowledge of a broad range of modelling techniques, such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
