The Role
Our Business Intelligence Service is responsible for council-wide data collection, analysis, visualisation, and performance reporting. We have an exciting opportunity for a Business Intelligence Analyst to join our service in the Children’s BI team. You will be dealing primarily with children social care data using tools such as SQL, Power BI and excel to analyse that data and provide insight.
We’re looking for someone who is interested in data and information and curious to apply any insights to improve outcomes for our children. You will have strong expertise in using excel and ideally have some knowledge of using SQL and PowerBi. You should also have some awareness of the roles and responsibilities of local authorities.

Key Responsibilities:
Collect, analyse, and interpret data to meet statutory reporting requirements and produce ad hoc reports.
Present clear, accurate evidence to inform decision making.
Produce comparative data and performance reports.
Develop ways to improve data accuracy and quality.
Respond to Freedom of Information Requests and any other adhoc requests for information, data and analysis.
Extract data using SQL.
Visualise data using Power BI.
Work Style
At North Somerset Council, we offer a hybrid working environment based on four distinct work styles. Depending on the role and personal circumstances, you will fall into one of these categories. However, please note that during the induction period, it may be necessary to spend more time in the office to support your learning and development. We are flexible and open to discussions about your preferred working style, and if you wish to be in the office more frequently, this can be negotiated.
This role falls into the category of Mobile Worker which means you can expect to work in the following way:
0-1 day in the office.
Includes field workers who primarily work remotely.
Comes into the office for meetings or focused work. Virtual connections with the team are essential, with portable technology supporting work on the go.
About You
We are looking for an individual who is passionate about data, analysis and who possesses the following skills and experience:
Essential Criteria:
Technically specific skills relevant to business intelligence/data analysis at NVQ Level 4 standard.
Strong experience with Microsoft Office Suite, especially intermediate to advanced Excel.
Ability to undertake statistical and analytical reasoning in specific work areas.
Experience in collecting, analysing, and interpreting data to support decision making.
Awareness of business intelligence protocols, including GDPR, statutory returns, and performance monitoring.
Desirable Criteria:
Familiarity with advanced statistical tools or BI platforms (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, SQL).
Experience of working within a local authority or public sector environment.
Knowledge of performance indicator frameworks and statutory reporting requirements.
