Job Description JOB TITLE: Apprentice Neurophysiology Science Practitioner DIRECTORATE: Medicine GRADE: Apprentice (Band 4) REPORTS TO: Head of Clinical Neurophysiology ACCOUNTABLE TO: Head of Clinical Neurophysiology Key Working Relationships: Internal and external; Patients Carers, clinical and non clinical members of staff. Also including other professional organisations Risk assessment: Manual handing activities, exposure to bodily fluids, needle stick injury, cross infection, lone working, aggressive and abusive behaviour and unpredictable patients and visitors. Exposure to emotionally distressing situations, e.g. working with terminally ill and relatives in the intensive care and neonatal environments. VDU and contained hazardous materials. Occasional exposure to hazardous materials e.g blood Job Purpose: Train to plan, record and interpret routine electroencephalography (EEG) to adult patients from a range of specialities suffering from a wide variety of medical disorders, where there is a need for concentration for lengthy periods using complex communication that may include barriers to understanding. This would also include those that may be neurological and / or affecting mental health requiring a level of negotiation skills to ensure full cooperation for the investigation to be performed. Analyse routine investigations using judgements inkling facts or situations to ensure a conclusion can be reached. Train to assist in the provision of multi-modality evoked potentials, on visually impaired patients requiring a degree of cooperation. Train to work collaboratively on a day to day basis with others to contribute to the smooth and efficient running of the service. Including involvement in multi-disciplinary team meetings, presenting work where necessary. Undertake and complete BSc (Hons) in Healthcare Science (Neurophysiology) as part of the level 6 apprenticeship programme. To include shadowing of senior staff in other professional areas. Participate in quality management, research, audit and development programmes. Presenting these at meetings where appropriate. KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical Duties 1. Maintain high standards of neurophysiological services to patients. Trains to assist in the recording of multi-modality evoked potentials. Assists with electromyography (EMG) clinics. Gains an understanding and experience in a variety of neurophysiological investigations and procedures to underpin academic learning. Cross discipline training where appropriate. Includes shadowing for at least 5 hours per week of more senior members of staff. Responsible for the safe use of own equipment and potentially that used by others. Perform simple fault remedy, cleaning and maintenance of recording equipment or any apparatus within the department, including care and maintenance of electrodes and transducers. Adheres to infection control practice, potential exposure to hazardous materials. Adheres to health and safety policies and promotes these to other members of staff. Adheres to safeguarding policies and promotes these to others. Education & Training Undertakes BSc (Hons) in healthcare Science (Neurophysiology) including the completion of a project in the final year. Completes all work based training and assessment elements in line with local, national and professional standards. Regular critical reflection on practice and undertakes appraisal Management / Leadership Undertakes responsibility for the efficient and effective use of physical and financial resources in Clinical Neurophysiology. Contributes to the procurement of items where necessary Contributes to the effective and efficient use of information resources, administration and data storage. Including storage of sensitive information. Administrative and clerical duties as directed by the Head of Clinical Neurophysiology. To promote and ensure equality, diversity and rights are adhered to at all times. Supervise more junior staff where appropriate.
