Clinical Responsibilities Deliver high-quality, safe, and compassionate nursing care to patients attending the Red Cell and Thalassaemia Day Units for blood transfusions and infusion therapies, including crizanlizumab, iron infusions, and other treatments. Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised nursing care plans in collaboration with patients, carers, and the multidisciplinary team. Undertake venepuncture and cannulation in accordance with Trust policy and ensure safe administration of blood products and infusions following BSH, SHOT, and Whittington Health transfusion guidelines. Monitor and record vital signs, recognise adverse reactions, and respond promptly to any clinical changes, escalating appropriately to the nurse in charge or medical staff. Ensure all patients are safely discharged from the unit with clear aftercare instructions and appropriate follow-up arrangements. Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and timely patient records in accordance with NMC standards, Trust documentation, and information governance policies. Adhere to infection prevention and control procedures and maintain a clean and safe clinical environment at all times. Contribute to the smooth and efficient running of the Day Unit, including managing patient flow, coordinating appointments, and maintaining equipment and stock levels. Professional Responsibilities Act at all times in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Whittington Health NHS Trust policies and values. Take responsibility for maintaining professional competence through ongoing education, training, and reflective practice. Participate in annual appraisal, setting personal objectives and identifying opportunities for development in partnership with the Day Unit Lead Nurse. Engage in clinical supervision and reflective practice to support personal and professional wellbeing. Participate in clinical audits, research projects, and service improvement initiatives to promote evidence-based practice. Be an advocate for patients and their families, ensuring dignity, respect, and culturally sensitive care at all times. Support the implementation of Trust policies on equality, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring fairness and respect in all professional interactions. Leadership, Teaching, and Teamwork Work collaboratively as part of the multidisciplinary team, communicating effectively with colleagues to ensure continuity and coordination of care. Supervise and support junior staff, healthcare assistants, and student nurses, acting as a mentor and positive role model. Participate in the induction and orientation of new staff, contributing to the development of a skilled and confident nursing workforce. Promote a supportive and inclusive working environment, encouraging open communication and teamwork within the unit. Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and professional forums as required. Governance and Safety Ensure compliance with Trust policies relating to safeguarding, health and safety, confidentiality, incident reporting, and medication management. Participate in risk assessments and take prompt action to address potential hazards or safety concerns. Report all incidents, near misses, and equipment faults in line with Trust procedures to support a culture of learning and improvement. Contribute to maintaining high standards of clinical governance within the service, including participation in audits and peer review. Service Development Support ongoing service improvement projects within the Red Cell and Thalassemia Day Units. Contribute ideas and feedback to improve patient experience, operational efficiency, and quality of care. Be adaptable to changes in service delivery and work flexibly across different clinical areas within the Trust as required to meet patient and organisational needs.
