The role:
We are seeking a competent and proactive Food Standards Officer to lead on food standards inspections in line with the Food Standards Delivery Model. The role involves undertaking both desktop and on-site inspections based on assessed risk, ensuring businesses meet legal requirements and safeguarding consumer protection. You will play a key part in delivering enforcement and compliance activities across a broad range of Trading Standards functions, working collaboratively with partner agencies and contributing to intelligence-led operations.
To apply, you must demonstrate proven competence in food standards, experience conducting risk-based inspections using the Food Standards Delivery Model, and the ability to produce clear, evidence-based reports to support enforcement activity.
Key accountabilities:
Carry out enforcement and compliance activities across product safety, fair trading, food standards, illicit tobacco/alcohol, age-restricted goods, animal welfare, weights and measures, and intellectual property using a risk-based approach.
Respond to complaints, intelligence, and service requests, providing timely and proportionate action.
Conduct inspections and proactive visits, including joint operations with partner agencies (e.g., Police, HMRC).
Prepare and present reports, evidence, notices, penalties, and legal documentation to support formal action.
Work collaboratively within the Intelligence Operating Model (IOM) and adhere to approved procedures and information-management systems.
Share information and coordinate activity with external partners and stakeholders to ensure consistency of enforcement.
Key criteria:
Competent in food standards and hold statutory qualification as detailed by FSA food law code of practice
Experience carrying out risk assessments using the food standards delivery model
Experience conducting food standards inspections - desktop or at identified premises
Ability to gather evidence, prepare reports and witness statements, and present evidence in court or formal settings (desirable).
Experience conducting investigations, obtaining witness statements, or applying risk-assessment methodology (desirable).
Understanding of early-intervention and prevention approaches (desirable).
