Job Purpose To create and promote a conducive learning environment that optimises the safe delivery of enhanced nursing care to our patients requiring orthopaedic and musculoskeletal care. To facilitate best practice and evidence-based knowledge and skill development for staff in order to optimise highest quality safe nursing care in the clinical area, and to optimise patients and families experiences of care. Clinical responsibilities: Facilitate staff training and compliance with Basic Life Support, Immediate Life support. Promote and enable the delivery high standards fundamental of care through supporting individual staff with developing clinical knowledge and skills that assure safe enhanced nursing care are delivered to patients. Deliver evidence based and hands clinical nursing skills. Undertake assessment of their competence when taking on these new skills and providing feedback and personalises support to individual nurses. Monitor and review clinical practice and professional standards through benchmarking, auditing. Identify and respond to changes in protocols, pathways and guidelines and policies. Maintain enhanced nursing care educational records for all staff, competencies and feedback. Coordinate robust induction programme for new starters into the clinical area and maintain a record of induction for all substantive and temporary staff. Support nursing students, and their supervisors/assessors within the clinical placement areas Facilitate developmental opportunities for newly registered nurses that enable them achieve competency and maintain portfolios of practice to meet the demands of their new role Help to monitor and report staff performance, institute remedial action planning where necessary. Maintain a visible presence within the clinical area, spend minimum of 80% of time working with staff at the bedside to assure delivery of high quality safe and excellent care are delivered to patients. Supervise and monitor the quality of fundamentals of nursing care and nursing documentation through EHR, is maintained to the Trust and NMC standards implement audit of clinical documentation and records to measure and evaluate care planning. Support Clinical Nurse Educator with educational audits to ensure educational quality standards are maintained. Action audit information to achieve agreed standards. To support staff in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, actively seeking evidence-based practice which will support excellent clinical outcomes for our patients. To be aware of and champion current trends and developments in nursing and in the NHS and to promote continuing professional development of self and colleagues. Identify clinical risks and ensure that appropriate action is taken under the supervision of the modern matron/senior nurse manager, in accordance with the Trust Risk Management policy. Ensure infection control policies are adhered to by self and those with whom you work. Address areas for action and improvement required in conjunction with Infection control and prevention team, ward management and all staff. Take personal responsibility for promoting a safe environment and safe patient care by identifying areas of risk and following the Incident, Serious Incident and Near Misses reporting procedure. People and Resources management Maintain and promote effective communication with multidisciplinary team and other wards/ departments including formal presentation of information relating to the ward/ department. Promote the corporate image of the Trust to all individuals, groups and organisations both within the Trust and to the community at large through representation of the Trust at regional and national conferences and in working groups as appropriate. Assist with the staff recruitment, retention and selection within the budgeted establishment. Co-ordinate structured orientation programmes for new staff, students, temporary staff and honorary visitors Support the practice supervisors and assessors to access relevant training and supervision, assist during managing failing staff/students ensure timely escalation and documentation. Facilitate staff personal and professional development plans through contributions to the Learning Needs Analysis and support staff with setting developmental aims and objectives. Take responsibility for own professional and personal development through research, innovation and attendance at suitable study days. Maintain active NMC registration, ensure regular performance review and appraisal, negotiating and agreeing personal and professional objectives with the line manager. Support and participate in the appraisal and personal development of staff and in line with the Trust policy. Support with implementing study days, team days and seminars that is relevant to clinical area and enhance nurses clinical skills. Act at all times to ensure own practise is in line with the Trust and Local policies and guidelines and also within the NMC Code of Conduct, and facilitate other staff to do same. To support the ward management and deputise for them in their absence. Research and Service development To ensure all team members have a real voice in the development of the clinical areas service Collaborate and assist in conducting clinical audit and research. Actively disseminates findings through positively role modelling, staff supervision, teaching and other appropriate communication methods. Support implementation of action plans to improve and maintain high standard of fundamental of care and nursing documentation. Participate in the Trust Business Planning cycle, identifying areas of service development. Policy development Actively contribute to projects relating to local policy development. To be actively involved in the development of Trust policies and procedures at ward level, and to facilitate its application in clinical area. To actively promote a healthy lifestyle for SCI patients and families and staff appreciating national strategy requirements.
