The Environment Agency are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve.
We’re looking for a proactive and solution-focused individual to join our Asset Performance team in South Somerset. As an Asset Performance Officer, you’ll play a vital role in managing flood risk assets across the West Somerset Streams and River Tone catchments, helping to protect people, property and the environment.
You’ll be responsible for ensuring our assets are inspected, surveyed, maintained, and operated safely and effectively. Your work will support the delivery of our annual maintenance programme and contribute to long-term resilience.
What you’ll do:
•Take ownership of flood risk asset management across your catchments, ensuring safe and efficient operation.
•Support the planning and delivery of maintenance activities and contribute to our annual work programme.
•Bid for funding for maintenance and asset refurbishment through our Asset Management System.
•Build and maintain strong relationships with internal teams, external partners, contractors, and local communities.
•Promote and embed modern asset management practices aligned with ISO55000 standards.
•Address matters relating to riparian ownership, legal and estate issues, permitting, and public interest.
•Work closely with maintenance planners to prioritise needs and set standards for asset condition.
What We’re Looking For:
•Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
•Experience or interest in asset management, flood risk, or environmental infrastructure.
•Ability to work collaboratively and influence across teams and organisations.
•Understanding of ISO55000 or willingness to learn and apply best practice standards.
In the Environment Agency responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be asked to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment, and full training will be available to support you with your incident role.
The team
This is an exciting opportunity to join the South Somerset Asset Performance Team, part of Flood and Coastal Risk Management Operations. We manage the whole lifecycle of flood and coastal assets to reduce risk, protect communities and improve the local environment. We are a friendly multi-skilled team of Catchment Managers, Assistant Catchment Managers, Engineers, Asset Inspectors, Technical Advisors, and Data Officers.
Experience/skills required

• Asset management experience, including identifying risk, contingency planning and whole life asset management.
• Data and information management skills.
• Confident communication and customer service skills, as you will be working with internal and external partners, as well as with members of the public.
• Good planning and organisational skills, you'll be able to demonstrate an ability to manage and interpret data and information.
• Competent in operating Microsoft suite.
Formal qualifications in civil engineering, project management, data and information management (e.g. GIS) and/or experience of undertaking works in accordance with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 are advantageous.
