We are looking for 2 substantive Consultants to work in 50:50 split posts between the Paediatric Intensive Care Department at Leeds General Infirmary and Embrace Transport Service which is part of Sheffield Childrens Hospital. These posts will support the service as part of the workforce development plan for the future. These posts are 10 PA appointments split 50:50 between PCCU and Embrace for a Paediatric Intensive Care Consultant, with a special interest in Transport as well as General and Cardiac Intensive Care. The posts involve 5 PAs on Paediatric Critical Care with an additional 5 PAs offered by Embrace Yorkshire and Humber Infant and Childrens Transport Service based in Barnsley, hosted by Sheffield Childrens Hospital Foundation Trust 2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST 2.1. The post will include 5 programmed activities (PA) at PCCU and 5 PA at Embrace. SPA time will be equally split between the two services. 2.2. To deliver care to patients with critical illness including: General Medical patients Medical and Surgical Cardiac patients Manage patients on Extracorporeal Life Support Specialist surgery including Neurosurgery; Liver transplant and Renal transplant Contribution to joint Cardiology and Cardiothoracic meetings Support the Embrace Transport service as a 5 PA commitment. 2.2. To work with Consultant colleagues in PCCU and Embrace to deliver acute on call (this is currently 1 in 9 for PCCU). This includes acute ward rounds and unit management during normal working hours and regular out of hours commitment on the on-call rota. The workload will be split between PCCU and Embrace such that you will work full time at either service for a period of approximately 3-6 months. There is flexibility within this in order to support both services and ensure a balanced post. 2.3. To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Childrens Hospital and across the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and with colleagues in district general hospitals; Sheffield Childrens Hospital and other regional transport services. 2.4. Embrace: The post will be for 5 programmed activities (PA) at Embrace as detailed above. The service is currently covered by the equivalent of 9 whole time consultants on a 1 in 9 rota. Out of hours on call commitment will be provided pro rata in line with PA commitments. During the induction period there will be a period of time working on the specialist trainee rota to gain familiarity if not recnetly worked at Embrace On call is non-resident after 22:00 and can be covered from home provided that post-holders live within 30 minutes travelling time or 10 miles of the Barnsley base. Overnight on site accommodation is available for consultants who live further than 10 miles away from base. Specific duties: o Take clinical and managerial responsibility for the transport service while on duty o Be familiar with equipment, operational policies and staffing levels/competencies o Facilitate conference calls for patients requiring immediate high priority transfer o Provide initial advice; facilitate conference call between referring clinician, identified accepting unit consultant and any other specialist required o Triage calls to determine the composition of the transport team o Provide advice to the transport team on the management of the transfer o Perform transfers including when patient acuity dictates a consultant level of care o Support training and development, including supervised transports, for new members of the team o Utilisation review o Reporting of incidents as part of a just culture o Involvement in audit and research o Adherence to policies agreed by the service o Be involved in the management of the service o Provide mentoring support to medical and nursing sta 2.5. To contribute to infection control, research, teaching and new developments within the Paediatric Critical Care Unit and Embrace. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in both services.
