Job Title: Care Home Chef / Cook
Reports to: Home Manager / Head Chef
Job Purpose:
To plan, prepare, and cook nutritious, well-balanced meals for residents in accordance with dietary requirements, preferences, and food hygiene regulations, while maintaining a safe and clean kitchen environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Meal Preparation & Cooking
Plan, prepare, and serve meals and snacks that are nutritious, appealing, and suited to residents’ dietary needs (including allergies, texture-modified diets, and cultural or religious preferences).
Adapt recipes to meet residents’ individual needs, including diabetic, low-salt, vegetarian, and pureed diets.
Ensure portion control and presentation standards are consistently high.
Menu Planning
Assist in creating seasonal menus in consultation with residents and care staff to encourage choice and variety.
Monitor stock levels and minimize food waste through effective ordering and portion control.
Health, Safety & Hygiene
Maintain the highest standards of food hygiene and kitchen cleanliness in compliance with HACCP, Environmental Health, and CQC regulations.
Ensure correct food storage, temperature control, and safe preparation procedures.
Complete daily kitchen records, including cleaning schedules and temperature logs.
Teamwork & Communication
Work collaboratively with care staff to support residents during mealtimes.
Supervise kitchen assistants or other catering staff as required.
Participate in training and development to maintain high standards of catering and safety.
Administration
Order supplies within budget and maintain accurate stock records.
Ensure all catering-related documentation and audits are completed accurately and on time.
Skills & Qualities:
Passion for cooking nutritious food and caring for older or vulnerable people.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Ability to work under pressure and manage time effectively.
Understanding of dietary needs related to age and health conditions.
Qualifications & Experience:
Food Hygiene Level 2 (minimum); Level 3 desirable.
Experience working in a care home, hospital, or similar catering environment.
Knowledge of CQC standards and special dietary requirements preferred.
