About the role

As a result, alongside several consortium partners; Balfour Beatty have been selected by bp (British Petroleum) to construct a first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage which is a key driving force behind plans to make Teesside the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster.

Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Works Manager to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.

To oversee and manage all aspects of complex work packages or sections, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and ensuring quality and safety standards are met. Responsible for providing leadership to construction teams, coordinating with various stakeholders, and troubleshooting any issues that may arise during the construction process.

What you'll be doing

Health, Safety & Environment
• Accountable for RAMs, Procedures and SSOW are in place throughout the Project
• Leads Pre-Starts with supply chains and their mobilisation of the Project
• Implementing Roles and Responsibilities of the Project team and Supply Chain with the correct competencies aligned to the level of risk, and approvals as per company requirements/systems
• Ensuring Project and supply chain meet the latest Balfour Beatty Policies and Procedures
• Assisting the Project Leadership and operational team in setting and implementing the plan for the Sustainability targets and goals

Production Control
• Lead Operational teams on the Project
• Coordination and implementation of site-wide daily briefings
• Programme delivery management for the holistic part of their project or the whole project including logic and sequencing resolutions with wider project requirements
• Accountable for the implementation of short interval control (Short Term Planning) decision-making concerning the overall programme
• Coordination and planning of BB construction teams’ work with the understanding of priority to the critical path and EVA efficiency
• Accountable for Integration of planning and site teams, ensuring clear two-way communication between all parties with accurate records of progress, risk/ blocker identification and mitigation
• Compliance and integration of credit rules between both planner and site operations
• Enforcing disciplined site records by the BB construction team and supply chain
• Including JV Members engagement and integration within the project with transparent communication on a 'one' project goal

Logistics
• Lead priority allocation of resources and logistics
• Accountable for plant and access of the project ensuring the facilitating of critical activities in the required sequence
• Accountable for site set-up mobilisation and maintenance of the Project Life Cycle confirming the best practices
• Accountable for Operational Project Readiness in line with Project Specifics
• Production and implementation of phasing construction plan with logistical constraints and opportunities identifying mitigations and action plan
• Plant, lifting & access management with a direction given to the logistical team in line with the site operations and programme
• Ownership of efficient site Deliveries and logistical material/ waste removal movements through the project with clear guidance to the logistics team

Quality & Technical
• Set Quality standards of the Project, inclusive of relevant documentation
• Lead teams to deliver in accordance with design and spec with full knowledge of the ERs and Design development
• Keeping up to date with regulation changes
• Identify and acquire lessons learnt that are relatable to project specifics then implement beneficial practices
• Implementation of 3D modelling to assess technical buildability and resolution to construction constraints
• Understanding Modern Methods of Construction. The ability to lead and implement within design and operation of the Project

Commercial
• Understanding Supply Chain Scope and Contract as well as ensuring wider construction team uses decision-making with this understanding
• Understand commercial implications and drivers within the construction process and incorporate these into decision-making of the construction and commercial team
• Lead team in contractual resolutions and reporting on the joint position of packages Build and understand scopes as well as understand the contractual obligation for their element of work both up and downstream
• Identify procurement requirements and commercial impact of delays, with effective records and management culpability

• Ownership of team development on competency to fulfil roles
• Ownership of senior supply chain members with a buy-in to the Balfour Beatty Site-Culture as well as advancing their competency in working for Balfour Beatty

Skills

  • Effective communication to manage customer relationships, in addition to planning and organisation skills to deliver operational excellence and efficiency
  • Effective leadership skills
  • Ability to improve safety and sustainability performance
  • Supporting negotiations and conflict resolutions as well as leading others to do the same
  • Adept in the management of data and processes
  • Ability to apply construction management principles at an expert level
  • Supporting stakeholder management
  • Advanced IT skills for the use of BIM and construction management tools

Knowledge

  • Detailed understanding of construction techniques, methodologies and management principles
  • Knowledge of Budgeting and cost control with financial awareness of delivery targets
  • Detailed understanding of scheduling and programme management. Short-term planning for the overall construction programme
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements and Standards
  • Detailed understanding of safety protocols and best practices
  • Knowledge of contract negotiation and procurement
  • Detailed understanding of quality assurance and quality control processes
  • Understanding of risk management and mitigation strategies
  • Understanding of environmental sustainability practices
  • Detailed understanding of construction technology and innovation
  • Understanding of digital implementation
  • Understanding of Legal considerations and dispute resolution

Experience

  • Experience in leading and developing a small single-disciplinary team
  • Previous Construction Management experience within the relevant industry is required
  • Involvement in developing and executing work package budgets
  • Experience with work package scheduling and timeline management
  • Experience with regulatory agencies and ensuring compliance with regulations and standards
  • Advanced experience in handling safety management on construction sites and implementing safety protocols
  • Awareness in negotiating contracts with subcontractors, suppliers, and clients
  • Self-sufficient in resolving conflicts and addressing challenges during construction projects
  • Experience in value engineering and cost-saving initiatives
  • Experience in overseeing quality assurance and quality control processes
  • Awareness of implementing environmentally sustainable practices in construction projects
  • Experience in utilizing construction technology and software for project management and documentation
