Crynodeb

The Environment Agency is committed to building an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We actively seek, embrace, and celebrate diversity. New starters receive full training, support, and all necessary equipment to succeed in their role.

As an Installations Officer specialising in landfill and hazardous waste treatment regulation, you will ensure operators comply with environmental permits through inspections, audits, and data reviews. Your work will focus on high-risk waste treatment sites, including hazardous waste treatment facilities and landfills, where environmental protection is critical. You’ll assess emissions, containment systems, and operational controls, identifying non-compliance and driving improvements.
You’ll work closely with our national permitting service, offering technical advice on permit applications and variations, ensuring conditions and limits are robust and enforceable. Liaising with operators, local communities, partners, and stakeholders is key, especially when addressing concerns around odour, pollution, or waste mismanagement.

Officers manage their own portfolio of sites and hold a warrant under Section 108 of the Environment Act 1995, enabling enforcement action where necessary. A firm but fair approach is essential to uphold environmental standards and protect public health.

Incident response is a vital part of the role. You’ll be trained and expected to participate in environmental incident management, which may attract additional payment.

This post sits within the Lincolnshire & Northamptonshire South Installations Team, based in Kettering or Peterborough. Our team regulates a diverse range of sectors, with a strong emphasis on hazardous waste and landfill operations. A full driving licence will be required.

The team

Our teams work flexibly across the area, delivering regulation of sites across a range of industrial sectors including chemicals manufacturing, power generation, incineration, metal production and metal surface treatment, food and drink, biowaste treatment, hazardous waste treatment and landfills.

Experience/skills required

You will have proven experience in any of the sectors mentioned above and can demonstrate good operational or regulatory knowledge of waste and industry in general.

Essential:
You will be a proactive, self-motivated and confident communicator, used to influencing and negotiating to deliver outcomes, with strong interpersonal skills, together with well-developed technical expertise or regulatory experience within an industrial or waste environment.

You will preferably:
· Be familiar with environmental management systems, auditing, and root cause analysis
· Be able to interpret environmental monitoring and performance data.
· Be used to managing multiple demands and delivering outcomes independently
· Take initiative and practice a continuous improvement approach.
· Have a degree or equivalent in a scientific, environmental or engineering discipline, and possibly be a member of a relevant professional organisation.
