An exciting and fulfilling opportunity is offered to a suitable candidate in supporting Blaenau Gwent’s Natural Environment Team in its responsibility for protecting and enhancing biodiversity within the County Borough.

We are seeking an enthusiastic Local Places for Nature Assistant to join our team to promote knowledge and understanding of biodiversity across the borough through the delivery of Local Places for Nature projects, which is funded by Welsh Government. The focus for the Local Places for Nature work programme for over the next year (up until end March 2027) will be the ‘Linking Landscapes’ project. The objective is to collaboratively work across both Blaenau Gwent & Torfaen Local Nature Partnership areas, demonstrating a landscape approach, to create and enhance resilient ecological networks that will contribute to the recovery of butterfly, moth and other indicator species that are in decline and listed as S7 species.

This exciting role will require experience of working within community groups, landowners and members of the Local Nature Partnership delivering the objectives of the ‘Linking Landscapes’ project.

You will have knowledge of Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINCs) and Local Nature Reserves (LNRs), with practical experience in conducting surveys. You will be required to undertake phase 1 habitat surveys and utilise GIS mapping systems.

The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate a collaborative approach to working with a range of partner organisations including NRW, neighboring Local Authorities, third sector organisations and community groups as well as internal departments. You will also be able to work independently towards delivering the key outcomes of the Linking Landscapes Project.
