Summary

Applicants are sought for the position of a Glaucoma fellow based primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford from August 2026. The post is for a period of 6 months in the first instance extended to 12 months subject to satisfactory progress.





Candidates should be in possession of Outcome 6 at ARCP before commencing in post or be post CCST or equivalent and wish to specialise in Glaucoma. This post is suitable for doctors who have completed their core ophthalmology training, areexperienced independent cataract surgeons (including complex cataract surgery), have undertaken some glaucoma training (clinics and glaucoma surgery) but seek specialist experience in Glaucoma management prior to obtaining a consultant appointment. Training in all aspects of Glaucoma is provided including,



· Clinical management,

· laser (SLT and YAG),

· Develop skill in performing complex cataract surgery,

· Traditional glaucoma surgeries (aqueous shunts, trabeculectomy) and Preserflo shunt

· MIGS (KDB procedure, Hydrus stent, GATT procedure).



A clinical trials unit is active and research opportunities are available and encouraged.





Participation in the on-call rota is the norm at a frequency of 1:11. It is not an approved training post.









The postholder’s duties will be primarily atthe John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxfordbut their presence may from time to time be required in other parts of the Trust, such as Witney, Abingdon or Banbury.

• Traditional glaucoma surgeries (aqueous shunts, trabeculectomy) and
• MIGS (KDB procedure, endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation, Xen implantation – Hydrus, OMNI and Preserflo procedure are pending approval).





Medical staff in training

In addition to the 21 Consultant staff members, we have 4 Clinical Research Fellows, 9 Specialty Registrars, 1 Clinical Lecturer, 15 Clinical Fellows, 2 Associate Specialists, 1 Foundation Year doctor and 6 clinically trained ophthalmologists undertaking full time research in the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology. The medical staff has extensive support from the optometry, orthoptics, imaging and the nursing department in outpatients, theatre and the wards. The Oxford Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service is also part of the department.











Oxford John Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The Oxford Eye Hospital is an internationally recognized centre of excellence in research. Candidates would be expected to engage in some research activity while in post. Additional funding to attend conferences will be provided if Oxford-based research is being presented, for instance, at ESCRS, UKEGS, ARVO, etc
