Summary


A full-time post in Thoracic Surgery is available at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, based primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. The post would be suitable for someone seeking additional VATS experience in thoracic surgery. Whilst the opportunities will be tailored to the successful candidates needs, preference will be given to those with previous experience.The post encompasses all aspects of thoracic surgery (open and thoracoscopic lung resection, pneumothorax surgery, chest wall resection, and interventional bronchoscopy) except for oesophageal surgery. The department encourages participation in clinical research, audit and teaching. This post is not approved for training and does not carry an NTN, although recognition of the year as sub-specialty training for those in UK training schemes may be sought by the applicant from their Deanery.

The post-holder’s duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital but there is a regular Lung Cancer MDT, Thoracic Surgery outpatient clinic, and occasional theatre lists at the Oxford Cancer & Haematology Centre in the nearby Churchill Hospital, and a regular Sarcoma MDT at the nearby Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. Clinics are also held at the Basingstoke site of Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The post-holder will participate in the Thoracic Surgery service’s inpatient and outpatient activities. This will involve on-call duties (thoracic only, no cardiac cross-cover), theatre lists, regular MDTs and outpatient clinics. The consultant staff will give in-service training as appropriate; training agreements will be made at the beginning of the appointment.

The post-holder’s duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital although occasional contribution to clinics and inpatient care may be required at the Churchill hospital.

The post-holder will participate in the service’s inpatient and outpatient activities i.e. experience in operating theatre, regular MDTs and outpatient clinics and postoperative rounds. The post-holder will be expected to participate in the in-service training and teaching; training agreements will be made at the beginning of the appointment.

The post-holder will participate in the full-shift cardiothoracic registrar on-call rota (currently 1:8 resident on-call), dealing with all cardiothoracic referrals and covering the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit on a full shift rota.
