A Band 3 Orthopaedics Healthcare Assistant works as part of a multidisciplinary team to support the care, treatment, and recovery of patients with musculoskeletal conditions, fractures, or post-surgical needs. The role involves both direct patient care and clinical support duties, under the supervision of registered nurses and other healthcare professionals.
Key Responsibilities
• Patient Care & Support
• Assist patients with personal care (washing, dressing, toileting, mobility).
• Support patients before and after orthopaedic procedures.
• Encourage independence and promote rehabilitation.
• Clinical Duties
• Take and record vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, oxygen saturation).
• Carry out routine observations and report changes in patients’ conditions.
• Support in applying and monitoring mobility aids, splints, or casts (under supervision).
• Assist with wound care, dressings, and monitoring post-operative sites.
• Chaperone patients during medical examinations.
• Ward & Team Support
• Prepare beds, equipment, and materials for admissions and procedures.
• Assist registered staff with plaster room or theatre support (if trained).
• Maintain accurate documentation of care given.
• Work closely with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and nurses to aid patient recovery.
• Patient Wellbeing
• Provide reassurance and emotional support to patients and families.
• Promote infection control, dignity, and safeguarding principles.
• Encourage mobility and rehabilitation exercises as instructed by physiotherapy staff.
