Your Role

Bilingual Assistants work with children who are new to English to help them settle into school life and support them in accessing the curriculum. Bilingual Assistants encourage children to continue to use, develop and value their first language whilst learning English. Bilingual Assistants also play an important role in developing the self-esteem of children from ethnically diverse backgrounds, and support school relationships with parents. The Ethnic Diversity Service has a bank of casual Bilingual Assistants who speak a variety of languages who can be available to support children in school when a referral is made.

About You

We are looking for bilingual or multilingual individuals who are passionate and care about supporting children in Stockport who are learning English as an Additional Language (EAL). This includes some of the most vulnerable children in Stockport, such as those seeking asylum and refugee children. You will need to be a team-player with excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills. You will need to be a clear communicator, in English and an additional language, who is approachable and responsive. You will also have experience of working with children, ideally in an educational setting. You will need to be proactive, be able to work independently, and be keen to undergo training and ongoing professional development.

About Us

Stockport’s Ethnic Diversity Service is a specialist service which provides a wide range of support for schools and children learning and using English as an Additional Language (EAL). We also promote equality and diversity and have strong ties to Stockport Interpreting Unit. Our team of experienced and specialist qualified teachers work in partnership with schools to strengthen EAL provision. We provide strategic advice alongside practical teaching and learning strategies. In addition to our specialist teachers, we have a large bank of casual Bilingual Assistants, giving schools access to a multitude of languages to support their children.
