SEMH 1:1 Teaching Assistant
This is a chance to be the calm, steady presence in a young person's life. You will be the person who shows up, listens without judgement, and helps them make sense of the world. You'll be working 1:1 with a Year 6 pupil who needs emotional support as much as academic guidance. You'll help them find their voice and build the confidence to take their next steps through daily interventions like journaling, reflection, and quiet regulation strategies.
What You'll Be Doing
- Leading gentle, creative interventions such as emotion journaling and sensory breaks
- Helping them recognise, name, and manage their feelings
- Supporting access to learning by adapting tasks and pacing as needed
- Being a trusted adult who offers consistency, kindness, and clear boundaries
- Liaising with teaching staff, SENCOs, and external professionals
- Contributing insights and observations to EHCP planning meetings where appropriate
What You'll Need
- Experience with children or young people with SEMH, trauma, or behavioural needs
- A warm, calm, and grounded approach
- The ability to build trust while maintaining clear professional boundaries
- A relevant Degree, Teaching Assistant or Childcare qualification
- A willingness to learn therapeutic strategies and embed them in daily routines
- Resilience, creativity, and a good sense of humour
The School
This is a nurturing, forward-thinking school with a strong focus on relationships, emotional wellbeing, and inclusion. Staff are trained in trauma-informed approaches and restorative practice. You'll be part of a team that genuinely believes behaviour is communication and that every child deserves to feel seen, heard, and safe.
Working Hours
Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 3.30pm
Full-time and part-time applications welcomed
Safeguarding children is an integral part of what we do and we have a stringent safer recruitment process. We undertake checks on all the candidates we work with. As such we require a current Enhanced DBS Disclosure for everyone working in Schools. If you do not have a subscription to the DBS Update Service, you may be required to complete a new DBS application as part of the registration process. If you take a temporary role with Sense Education you will be paid on a weekly basis. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position but long term. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available.
