Crynodeb

Are you interested in preserving and caring for industrial and transport heritage, and motivated by the opportunity to work with extraordinary large-scale collections and the people connected to them? Do you thrive on building relationships and inspiring people?

About us

The Science Museum Group comprises the Science Museum in London, the National Railway Museum in York, Locomotion in Shildon, the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford, the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester and the Science and Innovation Park in Wiltshire.

It has in its care an internationally significant collection of supersized and large objects - which includes parts of our aviation, rail, and transport collections. We are committed to providing greater public access to our collection through our work with organisations in the UK and internationally. We lend and transfer to a wide range of museums and heritage organisations primarily across the UK, including operational loans of several rail vehicles

About the role

In this role, you will support the development of partnerships and relationships across railway, aviation, and transport heritage sectors. This will include Accredited and non-Accredited museums, aviation and railway preservation groups and societies, heritage railways, and transport and industrial heritage organisations.

Building on the success of our extensive existing partnerships with heritage railways you will act as a point of contact for museums, heritage, and other relevant organisations that have supersize and large objects on loan or have the potential to care for them in the long term.

Working with Curatorial; Registration; Conservation; Hazards Management; Rail Engineering and Operations; and Storage, Access, and Logistic teams, you will be responsible for liaising with current and new borrowers and potential transfer recipients, sustaining and developing relationships with museums and other heritage organisations, understanding project requirements, and monitoring performance.

This role is a fixed term contract until April 2027. You will be working 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, based either at the National Railway Museum in York or the Science & Innovation Park in Swindon. You will be required to travel to different museums and heritage transport organisations two to three times a month, so a clean driving licence is required for the role.

About you
We're keen to see applications from candidates who can build trusted relationships and engage professionally with a wide range of people, from volunteers and preservation groups to external partners and internal teams. You'll bring proficient stakeholder management and negotiation skills, with the confidence to challenge constructively when needed and the awareness to understand different perspectives, including those with more traditional viewpoints. You'll be someone who can motivate and inspire others, balancing diplomacy with a readiness to change ways of working when it leads to better outcomes.

An interest in industrial and transport heritage is important, along with experience working with large or supersized collections and the specialist groups connected to them. Above all, we want someone who can efficiently organise their tasks, make sound evidence-based decisions under pressure, and uphold our standards and values while collaborating effectively across diverse and complex environments.

Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
