Leadership and Operational Management Provide day-to-day leadership and strategic direction for the pharmacy department, ensuring high-quality service delivery. Manage pharmacy staff, including pharmacists, technicians, and support workers, ensuring effective rota coverage and workforce planning. Oversee departmental performance against agreed KPIs, quality standards, and regulatory requirements. Clinical Governance and Medicines Safety Ensure full compliance with relevant legislation (e.g. GPhC, MHRA, CQC) and national guidance relating to medicines management. Lead on the development, implementation, and review of policies and SOPs for safe handling, prescribing, dispensing, and storage of medicines. Monitor and report medication incidents, lead root cause analysis (RCA) where necessary, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. Pharmacy Services and Medicines Optimisation Oversee the delivery of a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service across inpatient, outpatient, and theatre areas. Promote evidence-based, cost-effective prescribing through collaboration with prescribers and regular formulary review. Support the implementation of electronic prescribing systems and digital medicines optimisation tools. Team Development and Education Lead on recruitment, training, supervision, and performance management of the pharmacy team. Provide mentorship and development opportunities for team members, including support with professional registration and revalidation. Promote a culture of learning, development, and clinical excellence. Collaborative Working and Communication Build strong relationships with consultants, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure medicines are used safely and effectively. Represent pharmacy in governance meetings, multidisciplinary forums, and business planning activities. Act as the main point of contact for external regulators, inspectors, and pharmacy service providers. Financial and Resource Management Manage the pharmacy budget, ensuring appropriate procurement and cost control of medicines and consumables. Review usage trends and stock levels, identifying opportunities for savings and efficiencies. Ensure effective use of resources and systems to support operational and financial targets. WHAT DO YOU HAVE? Essential: GPhC-registered Pharmacist with substantial post-registration experience. Demonstrable experience in clinical pharmacy and leadership within a hospital setting. Excellent knowledge of medicines legislation, governance frameworks, and clinical standards. Knowledge of General Pharmaceutical Council Codes of Professional Conduct, Ethics and Performance and their implications for practice. Knowledge of the Care Standards Act and Care and Quality Commission Requirements. Strong leadership, communication, and team management skills. Ability to lead audits, investigations, and quality improvement projects. Desirable: Postgraduate qualification in clinical pharmacy, healthcare management, or leadership. Familiarity with electronic prescribing and medicines administration (EPMA) systems. Understanding of NHS and private sector funding, formulary management, and procurement processes.
