Job Introduction

We are seeking a reliable, proactive, and hands-on Education Centre Caretaker to support the day-to-day running of the Central Education and Study Centre (CESC) at Merville Barracks, Colchester CO2 7UT.
In this vital support role, you will ensure the security, cleanliness, and operational readiness of the Centre, helping to provide a professional and welcoming environment for Service personnel and staff.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who takes pride in maintaining high standards, enjoys a varied and practical role, and is comfortable providing first-line technical support for audio-visual systems.

What You'll Do

  • Ensure the security and cleanliness of the Central Education and Study Centre.

  • Prepare classrooms and training spaces for courses and bookings.

  • Conduct daily patrols and lock-up duties in line with Standard Operating Instructions (SOIs).

  • Provide first-line audio-visual systems technical support for Study Centre users, assisting with set-up and configuration.

  • Ensure audio-visual systems instructions and guidance are available for users and support where required.

  • Report building and equipment faults via the Sodexo helpdesk and maintain accurate records on 18 AEC’s SharePoint fault tracker.

  • Support the building custodian by completing the weekly Fire Diary and assisting with equipment and safety checks.

  • Maintain tidy, safe, and secure classrooms and common areas, ensuring windows, lights, and power points are turned off when not in use.

  • Assist with deliveries, refuse, and recycling, supporting the cleaning and maintenance team when needed.

  • Maintain excellent communication and customer service standards with all personnel using the facility.

What You Bring:

Essential:

  • Minimum of 2 GCSEs (Grade C or above), or equivalent; or NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration.

  • Able to pass a Basic Security Check (BPSS).

  • IT literate, with good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and security.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a professional and helpful approach.

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a facilities, caretaker, or building support role.

  • Familiarity with audio-visual systems and classroom equipment.

  • Previous experience in a military or educational environment.
