Specialist Mentor
The Specialist Mentor role at the University of Sheffield offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on the academic progress and overall university experience of disabled students. As part of our Support Worker Service, you will join a team of passionate mentors dedicated to providing exceptional support and ensuring successful outcomes for our students.
Responsibilities:
● Provide tailored, one-to-one mentoring to disabled students, addressing barriers to learning caused by specific impairments.
● Support students with various conditions, including Autism Spectrum Conditions, ADHD, mental health conditions, communication or organisation difficulties, and medical conditions.
● Implement practical strategies and management techniques to promote independence and autonomy.
● Build professional working relationships with a caseload of students, combining a person-centred approach with an understanding of their specific condition.
● Empower students to develop the necessary skills and awareness for successful learning.
Requirements:
● Proven experience working with disabled students in an educational setting.
● Excellent knowledge and understanding of a range of impairments, including Autism Spectrum Conditions, ADHD, mental health conditions, communication or organisation difficulties, and medical conditions.
● Educated up to undergraduate degree level 6 (or above) and must be registered with a relevant professional body (e.g. BACP, HCPC, SWE).
● Strong communication skills to effectively support and engage with students.
● Ability to determine individual needs and tailor support accordingly.
● Excellent organisational and time management skills to successfully handle a caseload of students.
