Your main duties will be to :

Contribute your veterinary and epidemiological expertise to the AMR Surveillance & Evidence team on matters involving AMR surveillance, research, and interventions. This will involve working with peers within the team and within the wider animal health and One Health surveillance contexts to improve the UK’s evidence base on AMR in animals, including developing new AMR surveillance and research projects.
Work with governmental and external partners, including in academia, to generate insights from existing data, including by co-supervising or helping commission research. Conduct basic analyses and visualisation of AMR data in R, and communicate outputs to the wider AMR team.
Support the Head of the AMR Surveillance and Evidence team, and the Head of Surveillance Division, in the response to notifications of resistant bacteria of concern to animal and public health. This will include: coordination of experts from across government departments and One Health sectors in all UK countries; improvement of existing processes including data-sharing; and development of evidence- and risk-based plans for the management and communication of these findings.
Support the Head of AMR Surveillance and Evidence in working towards an integrated One Health surveillance programme for AMR in the UK, including by engaging with AMR surveillance counterparts in other sectors.
Provide veterinary and epidemiological input to the wider AMR team. This will include providing technical advice and drafting lines for policy colleagues to help formulate evidence-based policy, and to support outputs such as policy briefings and external communications.
Contribute to setting the agenda for meetings of the Defra Antimicrobial Resistance Coordination group (DARC), which includes representatives from all four UK countries and covers animal health, food safety, human health and environment authorities.
Contribute to production of the UK-VARSS and One Health reports.
Represent the AMR Team at relevant domestic and international visits, meetings and conferences, including deputising for the Head of AMR Surveillance and Evidence where appropriate.
Contribute to the VMD’s educational programmes, for example by delivering lectures or contributing expertise to national or international training programmes on AMR surveillance and research.
Engage with the wider animal health community, to increase awareness of, and support for, current and future AMR surveillance and research activities.
Comply with ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 27001 (information security) standards, and GDPR and record management requirements.
Act corporately – meeting, role-modelling, embedding, and championing the corporate objectives set by the VMD.
