The Sunderland Empire

With 2000 seats The Sunderland Empire is the largest seated theatre between Edinburgh and Manchester. Opened by music hall superstar Vesta Tilly in 1907, the theatre has entertained millions of people in its history.

Over the years we have hosted the biggest West End musicals and featured an array of stars, while ensuring we continue to foster new talent and nurture those who will be the future of our creative industries with classes, recitals and community work all part of our DNA. This year we look forward to being the home of stellar shows such as Mary Poppins, Fiddler on the Roof and Matilda .

The Sunderland Empire is part of the Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG), the global leaders in live entertainment. ATG owns and operates over 80 venues worldwide, is an internationally recognised and award-winning producer and operates a market leading theatre ticketing business.

Sunderland is undergoing a cultural transformation, with new venues, new business investments and new residential developments all underway in the city. Over £500m of projects are already under construction in the city centre, with our theatre as the cultural cornerstone.
