We are currently looking for an experienced Ship Manager – Technical Superintendent to join our Marine Management Team. The role is based from our Chichester offices but will be a mixture of site, remote and out of hours working, so whilst we are adaptable to location, we do require you to have suitable flexibility to fulfil this role.

Role Responsibility

As the Ship Manager – Technical Superintendent you will be responsible for the preparation of repair and maintenance specifications, detailed planning to ensure that budgetary requirements are accurately forecast, monitored and maintained to minimise vessel downtime, whilst meeting the legislative requirements, flag state and classification rules. You will have management responsibilities of ship staff to ensure safety and performance standards are maintained to the highest level.

Your role will include:

  • To maintain all vessels structure, systems and equipment to the requirements of the Classification Societies and the MCA.
  • Preparation of high-quality repair and maintenance specifications, evaluation of quotations and selection and effective management of contractors.
  • The procurement and management of all spares to ensure the timely execution of repairs and to minimise vessel downtime.
  • Prompt reporting of and rectification of breakdowns and damages.
  • In liaison with the Marine Operations Manager, arrange the timing of repairs, maintenance and surveys to optimise vessel utilisation.
  • In liaison with other members of Marine Administration, to assess the performance of senior sea staff and assist with the recruitment of new sea staff engineers.
  • Evaluating and managing vessel and system modifications.
  • Monitor oil analysis reports and initiate appropriate action.
  • As required by the Marine Fleet Manager and in liaison with the Marine Safety Team, to ensure the prompt attention to all health and safety issues raised by the vessels and other members of Marine Administration.
  • Via vessel Masters and Chief Engineers, the effective operation of the vessels equipment and systems.
  • Via vessel Chief Engineers, the management of consumable stores.
  • As a member of the company ERT, to conduct duties as detailed in the Emergency Procedures manual.
  • The management of the company’s marine personnel with the Fleet Support Administrator
  • In liaison with other members of Marine Administration, to support the recruitment of suitably qualified employees to sea staff, to maintain a practicable, consistently high level of competence amongst sea staff.
  • To assist and maintain a training policy which will include monitoring the attendance of personnel at industry training courses, where relevant, and career progression for sea staff by gaining superior Certificates of Competency where and when possible.
  • Managing the fleets’ use of fuel and lubricating oils.
  • Attend assigned vessels during dry docking and alongside repairs.
  • Manage associated responsibilities as defined within the Asbestos Management Plan.

The Ideal Candidate

To succeed in the role of a Ship Manager – Technical Superintendent you will need:

  • Engineers Unlimited Certificate of Competency, or military equivalent
  • Project Management experience (APM Project Management Qualification)
  • Experienced in Health and Safety (NEBOSH, IOSH)
  • Highly effective people management skills (CMI, ILM)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent IT skills

Any of the following would be advantageous

  • Previous experience with TSHD vessels
  • A proven history of managing complex dry-dockings and maintenance projects
  • Experienced in heavy engineering / repair
  • Ability to access any of our ships, therefore you must be able to work on seagoing vessels
  • Able to spend extended periods away from home in support of repair and maintenance projects
