The Department’s Maritime Safety Policy team is located within the Maritime People & Safety Division and delivers a broad range of important work.

The team has responsibility for safety policy across all aspects of the maritime world from shipping to ports, maritime pilotage and recreational activities. They work closely with colleagues in the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the UK’s maritime safety regulator, the Marine Accident Investigation Branch, the General Lighthouse Authorities and the sector on all aspects of national policy, legislation, and response to major incidents.

In addition, the team manage the portfolio of 5,300 merchant shipwrecks the Department owns around the world having underwritten their insurance during the First and Second World Wars. They also have responsibility for the UK’s interests in many other high-profile wrecks including the RMS Titanic and SS Richard Montgomery.

These are all high-profile issues within the Department with often national, and international, interest which involve significant exposure to ministers.

Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:

Contributing to the development and delivery of a new maritime strategy representing the opportunity to set the direction of maritime safety policy for the next decade.Leading projects across a wide range of maritime safety-related policy, legislative and developmental areas including on the UK’s lighthouses, maritime pilotage, port marine operations, and improving ship safety and standards.Leading on approvals for the procurement of a new fleet of vessels for the General Lighthouse Authorities. Managing the wrecks portfolio to achieve good value for money for the UK taxpayer including environmental pollution, salvage awards and records management;Building and maintaining close working relationships with key stakeholders;Line management of one HEO.
