(i) Clinical Duties –The appointee will be responsible for the clinical management of patients under their care, and, in liaison with consultant colleagues with demonstration of professional values as per the Good Clinical Practice
(ii) Teaching and Supervision of Junior Medical Staff & Students -The appointee will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff. Where appropriate, the appointee will be named in the educational contract of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing the progression of their career and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers.

Summary overview of post
The Emergency Department at Southmead Hospital is one of the busiest EDs in the South West having over 100,000 attendances per year. This echos the diverse population of Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset providing a broad spectrum of clinical presentations. Furthermore, the patient population reflects the vast tertiary services available within the hospital, to include Vascular, Plastic Surgery and Burns, Transplant and Urology, Renal Medicine, Neurosciences and Orthopaedics.
Southmead ED is the Major Trauma Centre for the West Country, working within Severn Major Trauma Network. This service provides 24/7 Consultant-led trauma care and the opportunity for all junior doctors to experience and immerse themselves in trauma medicine.
The department is on Level 0 of the Brunel Building. The clinical facilities consist of - 6 resuscitation bays (including 3 isolation cubicles) and a dedicated Resus CT Scanner, 14 bays within the ‘majors’ department (including 10 isolation cubicles), 16 bays in the ‘Emergency Department Assessment Unit (EDAU)’, 14 bays within the ‘minors’ department,dedicated suture and plaster rooms and a separate area for paediatric triage and assessment. Centralised within the ED lives the Emergency Zone Radiology Department consisting of CT, USS and XR with on-site consultant and on-call registrar radiologists and reporting radiographers.
The department currently employs 27 consultants, 12 middle grades, 8 Speciality Doctors and 28 junior doctors, alongside ACPs, ENPs, ESPs and Nurses.
