We are delighted to invite applications to join our innovative, leading stroke department based in Winchester. This exciting opportunity has arisen to replace a full-time retiring colleague, however less than full-time and flexible working applications will be considered.
We are a progressive forward thinking department with a strong ethos of learning, collaboration and quality improvement. The Hampshire Hospitals Stroke team has been commended on various aspects of the service in recent years, especially the hyperacute pathway with some of the fastest scanning times in the country, and a thrombolysis rate that has improved to above 20% following participation in the national TASC initiative – greater than regional and national averages.
The role includes rotational cover of:
- The hyper-acute stroke unit, the acute stroke ward, and the stroke rehabilitation ward
- A daily TIA clinic
- Daily front door emergency department cover including reperfusion decisions
- Outpatient stroke follow-up clinics
- Participation in a 1 in 6 stroke on-call rota including weekend working
The role will involve close collaboration with the advanced clinical stroke practitioner team, the SCAS paramedics, and the emergency department staff to enable rapid assessment and management of stroke patients, plus collaborative working with neuroradiology and neurology colleagues to facilitate shared management of complex cases.
Consultants also provide support to the wider rehabilitation MDT, the Early Supported Discharge team and the stroke research team. Each consultant is expected to take on a leadership role with the different domains of the business unit including outpatients, hyperacute pathways, imaging, governance, education and training. The service is also a key part of the Wessex Integrated Stroke Delivery Network. We have representation on hyperacute and rehab workstreams, and lead on the regional education and workforce workstream.
Our vision is to provide outstanding care for every patient. Patient care is at the heart of what we do at our three sites: Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester and Andover War Memorial Hospital. Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides medical and surgical services to a population of approximately 600,000 people across Hampshire and parts of West Berkshire.
Our cultural ambition is to have a culture that places people at the heart of all we do, where we all belong, and where learning, improvement and excellence thrive.
We provide specialist services to people across the UK and internationally. We are one of only two centres in the UK treating pseudomyxoma peritonei (a rare form of abdominal cancer) and we are leaders in the field of tertiary liver cancer and colorectal cancer.
The trust employs more than 9,000 staff and has a turnover of over £500 million a year. As a Foundation Trust, we are directly accountable to our members through the governors. The Council of Governors represent the interests of their constituencies and influence the future plans of the Foundation Trust.
