Job OverviewWe are seeking a skilled HVAC Engineer to lead the planning and maintenance of critical and non-critical Air Handling Units and oversee operations of Fan Coil Units and Chilled Beams within the Alder Hey Children's Hospital Account, a flag ship facility for Mitie. We require a solid track record in ventilation maintenance, a strong understanding of compliance with HTMs, and extensive experience in maintenance delivery. While a ventilation qualification is preferred, candidates with relevant engineering or maintenance qualifications are also encouraged to apply. This role offers a unique opportunity to serve as the AP for ventilation systems, providing a platform for continuous learning and growth.
In collaboration with the Ventilation and BMS Supervisor, you will cultivate a culture of knowledge sharing and best practices within the local FM team. Your expertise will drive technical excellence and operational compliance.

As a HVAC Engineer at Alder Hey Children's Hospital, you will significantly influence the future of our technical services, aligning with our overarching organisational goals and objectives of compliance and consistency. The HVAC Engineer will be responsible for planning and practical maintenance activities relating to Air Handling Units approx. 80 within the Alder Hey account and oversight of operations relating to Fan Coil Units (circa 231) in the most cost-effective manner, demonstrating ‘value for money' and delivery a quality maintenance service.
The successful candidate will have a proven history of Ventilation maintenance and requirements and compliance with HTMs and proven experience in maintenance delivery. Preferably ventilation qualified but with engineering / maintenance / relevant qualifications, and will be the named Appointed Person for Ventilation
Main Duties
-Reactive repair and maintenance of all ventilation systems/ circuits including Air Handling Units on site
-Supporting Validations and Verifications undertaken by specialist contractors
-Work with specialist BMS contractor to ensure all HVAC is running in line with design
-Work with specialist contractor to support fire damper maintenance
-Component servicing and replacement
-Filter Changes
-Glass Trap
-Belts changes
-Motor changes
-Vibration Analysis
-AHU Ventilation air-intake / vermin screening
-Annual Verification / following remedial actions completed
-FCU maintenance and operation
-Support and inputs into the operational risk register
- Effectively lead the procurement process to ensure that subcontractors are suitably briefed and vetted against Mitie procedures.
-Establishes a culture that expects right first time..
-Actively targets opportunities to exceed customer expectations.
-Creates an environment for AH wider team to seek improvement.
-Identifies challenges and defines methodologies that overcome these to deliver a safe and cost-effective solution that delivers the programme.
-Evaluates success of completed maintenance work and proposes improvements.
-Challenges provided information and the principles behind it.
-Anticipates problems and proactively resolves them.

What we are looking forProficient level of Ventilation knowledge. Extensive experience as a HVAC Service Engineer, with a strong preference for candidates with additional expertise in related building services, demonstrating versatility and a comprehensive understanding of mechanical systems.
• Strong knowledge of chiller systems, controls, and components, including DX, Split, and VRV systems, Air Handling Units (AHUs) and ventilation plant. Familiarity with the latest industry standards and best practices is preferred.
• Relevant technical qualifications in HVAC are essential, with a minimum of NVQ Level 3 in electrical or mechanical. Additional certifications or training in specialized HVAC systems, F-Gas or energy management would be advantageous.
• Proven experience working with major HVAC manufacturers such as York, Trane, Carrier, Airedale, Hitachi, and Mitsubishi. Knowledge of these manufacturers' specific product lines and service protocols is highly desirable.
• Exceptional troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities, with a track record of resolving complex HVAC issues efficiently and effectively. Familiarity with diagnostic tools and software is a plus.
• Effective communication skills both verbal and written. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team is highly appreciated. You will be fostering a positive work environment and sharing knowledge with colleagues, which is integral to our success.
• Proficient level of Health and Safety/CDM management.
• Planning skills. Strong administrative skills, including proficiency in using IT devices for work completion and generating detailed technical reports. Experience with maintenance management software is advantageous.
• Stakeholder management skills. Outstanding customer service and communication skills, focusing on building solid relationships with clients and stakeholders. Experience in addressing customer concerns and providing tailored solutions is essential.
• Customer care/relationship building skills.
• Ability to manage change successfully.
• Demonstratable MEP knowledge is desirable.
• A relevant Health & Safety qualification such as IOSH / NEBOSH
• Willingness to participate in an on-call rota, providing support outside of regular working hours as required to ensure the reliability and safety of HVAC systems.
• Playing a key role in supporting social impact delivery.
Always follow Group and company policies and procedures.
-Report any deficiencies in systems of work or equipment provided that may result in failure of service delivery or risk to health and safety or the environment.
-Use all work equipment and personal PPE properly and in accordance with training received.
Report any issues or training needs to your Line manager and /or via the incident reporting system.
“Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) DNA Sample Requirement
This role may require regular entry to high-risk or forensically clean areas of the SARC at Rainbow. As such, and as part of our commitment to supporting Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust to maintain the highest forensic standards and comply with UKAS accreditation requirements, the successful candidate will be required to provide a DNA sample to be held on the Staff Elimination Database for the purposes of eliminating your DNA from any forensic samples that may be taken at the SARC.
