The Chief Operating Officer Group works closely with the Home Office’s policy and operational commands to enable us together to deliver the department’s priorities. The group is comprised of different teams and professional functions, including Commercial, Finance, People, Portfolio and Project Delivery, Security, Estates and Information and Digital, Data and Technology.

Home Office Security is within Security, Estates, & Information Directorate. Our mission is to raise standards and protect our people, assets, and information. We provide a range of services, advice and assurance to the department and seek to mitigate malicious or inadvertent risk, investigate alleged wrong-doing and identify vulnerabilities, and prepare for disruptive challenges.

This is a diverse and exciting role, for which, full training will be provided, along with mentoring ensuring you are fully supported within the role.

Home Office Security is responsible for ensuring robust physical security solutions are in place to protect Home Office buildings, staff and assets. We provide security guarding at Home Office building receptions across the country, HO Public Caller Units, including Reporting Centres, Asylum Intake Units and Service Support Centres, we are also responsible for monitoring the electronic security systems, alarms, CCTV and access control via our 24/7 Home Office Security National Control Room. The Fire Control Centre (FCC) room 24/7 monitoring all Fire Panel systems, PAVA and alarm systems.

The successful candidate will form part of the security management team and be responsible for overseeing the daily running of security on site. This is an important and varied role which has a considerable effect on the day-to-day operation of the Croydon Estate and wider business objective.

The Security Supervisor provides effective operational management to the Security Guarding Team ensuring the Physical Security of HO buildings, staff and assets are maintained at all times. There are a high degree of “reactive” tasks associated with the post, therefore flexibility and prioritising are key requirements.

Please note: Duties will be a mix of office-based, outdoors and customer-facing in all weathers.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide 24/7 operational supervision of the Security Guarding team across public-facing areas, control room, staff reception, loading bay, and FCC room.
  • Ensure physical security of Home Office buildings, staff, and assets is maintained at all times.
  • Oversee access control procedures, ensuring staff display passes and visitors/contractors have approved access before receiving temporary passes.
  • Monitor national control rooms for intruder alarms, CCTV, and automated access systems across UK and European sites.
  • Ensure fire panels and alarm systems in the FCC room are fully operational and appropriately managed during emergency activations.
  • Verify public appointments and conduct security searches in line with departmental procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records, logs, and paperwork related to security operations and incidents.
  • Operate and manage radio communications effectively to support security coordination.

Working pattern

Due to the business requirements of this role, it is only available on a full-time basis.

The post holder is required to always be physically present at the designated office or work location to perform the duties of this role; remote working is not permitted.

The role requires the individual to complete shift working (Earlies, Lates and all shifts in-between) and to be flexible.

Successful candidates will need to be able to attend for all shifts including early starts, late night finishes, and overnight shifts. These shifts may be outside of public transport operating hours.

Training

Due to nature of the role, applicants must be physically fit. On appointment, the post holder must attend and pass Conflict Management Training Theory classroom-based practice in De-escalation and Dojo Training in physical intervention (~4 days, in person). Support will be provided. It will then be undertaken as an annual refresher.

Travel

The post holder may be required to visit HO buildings or when directed to assist in the managing of the Hounslow estate due to our National Control room back up location outside of Croydon.
